Euclid – Typeface Mystery No. 1, the first book of a series designed by Hubertus Design out now!

More than three years after the release of our first typeface monograph, we’re proud to launch a new book. Announced about a month ago, “Euclid – Typeface Mystery No. 1” was conceived and designed by Hubertus Design. The Zurich-based studio was given carte blanche for a book that would showcase the many facets of Euclid, our ultimate geometric sans typeface. And they lived up to their name as a leading voice in innovative book design. Their team came up with an idea that transcends the expectations – including our own.

If you assumed that a publication devoted to a typeface would be one big specimen, think again. Like our previous “SangBleu Typeface: The King, His Court, The Explorer & The Gift”, the new book is a graphic and textual experiment in its own right. “Euclid – Typeface Mystery No. 1” is a multidisciplinary triptych, constructed from three skillfully interwoven: At the heart of the book is “A Snippet of the Clear Night Sky”, a mystery novel that Matthias Michel has authored specifically for this purpose. Hubertus Design brought in Matthieu Gafsou. The Franco-Swiss artist contributed “Eerie Indeed”, a series of photographs that augment the book with a rich pictorial layer. And then there’s the Euclid Typeface, which is used to set all text. The combined outcome is just as beautiful as it’s disturbing, and a creation that we find difficult to categorize.

Jonas Voegeli, Hubertus Design (Concept & Art Direction)

Presentation of the font
“As far as the design is concerned, and the related question of the mediation of a typeface in comparison to the use of a typeface, the answer is simple: Because in our work, which is always approached with certain care for type and typography, type is always part of the subject and the mediation level.”

Matthias Michel (Novel, Concept & Art Direction)

Font as “main character”
“Since a good typeface delivers incisive ‘characters’, it is mainly a matter of imagination to implement it as the driving force of a story, not only as a means of "action" but also as a matrix for human characters. In this respect, ‘Euclid’ was a perfect incentive: It is, on the one hand, an almost perfect font family, almost perfectly commercial, almost perfectly variable, almost perfectly classic and contemporary at the same time. And on the other hand, it refers to ancient and pre-typographical principles.”
