Call for Choosing Wisely Alberta Research Funding Proposals 2019
Choosing Wisely Alberta (CWA) is part of a larger Canadian movement (Choosing Wisely Canada) for reducing unnecessary tests and treatments in health care. The following partner organizations of CWA (Alberta Medical Association, Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta) have contributed to a pool of funds to support projects that further the goal of advancing care by promoting appropriate testing and clinical management. Please distribute the attached call for funding proposals document within your organization as you see fit.

MS Society of Canada Research Grants and Awards Competition
The MS Society of Canada's 2020-2021 Research Grants and Awards Competition is now open. Applications are due October 1, 2019 at 16:00 EDT.
Through its various funding opportunities, the MS Society is committed to supporting research that will lead to major advances in our understanding of multiple sclerosis (MS):
Discovery Research Grants (Operating Grants) for Biomedical and Clinical and Population Health Streams
The Discovery Research (previously called Operating Grant) Grant Program is intended to support various research projects aligned with the MS Society of Canada’s new strategic plan within two streams: Biomedical and Clinical and Population Health. The amount that may be requested for Discovery Research (operating) grants is approximately $ 100,000 per year for a maximum of three (3) years.
Discovery Research Pilot Grants (Clinical and Population Health Stream only)
The discovery research pilot grant program awards seed funding that allows researchers to develop and test new and innovative research
questions and pursue pioneering approaches that have the potential to impact the MS field in topics related to Clinical and Population Health (CPH). The amount that may be requested for the discovery research pilot research grants is approximately $ 50,000 over up to two (2) years.
endMS Personnel Awards
The MS Society supports the next generation of talented young researchers who will take on the mantle of advancing MS research in the search for a cure. This award provides opportunities for research training and broadening the scientific understanding of MS for Master’s and Doctoral students and
Postdoctoral fellows.
Funding for an additional year: For those who hold an endMS Studentship Award or Postdoctoral Fellowship and are seeking funding for an additional year, the deadline to submit a progress reports is November 5, 2019 at 16:00 EDT.

CIHR Grants
CIHR Project Grants and Priority Areas: Did you know that Patient-Oriented Research is a priority area for the Fall 2019 Project Grant competition? This means five additional bridge grants of $100K each, for relevant applications not funded in the Project Grant scheme, but in the fundable range.
Registration deadline: August 14, 2019 before 6:00 pm (see link and Project Grant instructions).
CIHR Team Grant Personalized Health This funding opportunity is for teams that will empower patients/individuals for personalized health approaches by implementing predictive analytic methods and eHealth delivery platforms. The maximum amount available per team is $2M over four years.

National Sanitarium Association
National Sanitarium Association - Innovative Research Program: This opportunity is for innovative emerging and important new areas of research in the broad field of pulmonary science and medicine. These grants are for up to $1M over five years. Application deadline: October 15, 2019.
NACTRAC
NACTRC Grant Development Support Fund: Financial support is available from the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials and Research Centre (NACTRC) for developing applications to highly competitive grant competitions in
pillars 2 to 4.

Northern Alberta Academic Family Medicine Fund (NAAFMF)
Request for Proposals is Now Open
In 2012 the Northern Alberta Academic Family Medicine Fund, an endowment held by the University of Alberta and managed by employees of the Department of Family Medicine, was established. The interest generated from this endowment is intended to support initiatives promoting the advancement of family medicine.
A fund management committee was established to review Requests for Proposals from Family Medicine staff, residents, students and trainees. Now on our twelfth RFP, we are very pleased with the response to this initiative. To date, the committee has funded over 74 proposals.
The Fund Management Committee is pleased to announce the opportunity to submit to the thirteenth round of project
proposals. These projects are supported by the interest received from the endowment funds invested by NAAFP.
As per the Terms of Reference of the fund, activities of the following nature are eligible:
Educational infrastructure,
Awarding prizes,
Research by department faculty members, residents, students and trainees,
Research and personal development activities, and
Any other educational, research and/or administrative activity which the Fund Management Committee deems advisable for the general education and/or research purposes of the Department.
Deadline for submission is midnight on Friday, September 27, 2019
