PARENT NEWSLETTER It's Almost Here Missouri Military Academy’s annual fundraising and leadership award dinner, Maroon and Gold, will be April 7, 2018 at the historic Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis. This is a great event, with dinner, drinks, and entertainment all for the best cause - our MMA cadets! Anyone who supports the MMA tradition is invited to attend this evening of dinner and entertainment. A silent and live auction are held to raise funds in support of Missouri Military Academy programs. Since 2010, Maroon and Gold has continued to grow year after year, and we invite you to be part of this exciting celebration of a tradition of excellence in education. The “I Will Hold” Award The 2018 General Clifton B. Cates 1910 “I Will Hold” Award for Leadership will be presented to General Frank J. Grass, U.S. Army (Ret.) during the event. General Frank J. Grass, U.S. Army (Ret.) General Frank J. Grass served as the 27th Chief, National Guard Bureau and as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from September 2012 to August 2016. In this capacity, he served as a military adviser to the President, Secretary of Defense, National Security Council and was the Department of Defense’s official channel of communications to the Governors and State Adjutants General on all matters pertaining to the National Guard. He was responsible for ensuring that the more than 450,000 Army and Air National Guard personnel were accessible, capable and ready to protect the homeland and to provide combat forces to the Army and Air Force. General Grass retired on 1 September 2016 after nearly 47 years as a Soldier. Valentine Ball The 2018 Valentine Ball was a great success, with 29 special guests representing the Miss Missouri and Miss Outstanding Teen organization in attendance. Local titleholders, along with Miss Missouri Jennifer Davis and Miss MO Outstanding Teen Heleena Haberer, were in attendance and were thrilled for our young gentlemen to escort them in the traditional Grand March that evening. All enjoyed hours of dancing and fun! Passing ThroughCongratulations to the new cadets who now officially wear the MMA hat brass as evidence of completion of their new cadet training. The moment was marked during the Passing Through Ceremony during Valentine Weekend. 529 Plan Update Due to recent changes to U.S. law, individuals may now use funds from their 529 savings plans for secondary education expenses. 529 plans can provide federal tax advantages, with additional income tax benefits in participating states. Parents, grandparents, and other relatives can hold 529 savings plans. Talk to your financial advisor or tax professional about how this program might benefit you. Farewell to Mrs. Smith On Wednesday, February 21, cadets and staff shared cake (chocolate, of course) with Christine Smith, the VP for Marketing and Enrollment Management, as she prepares to depart for a new position with the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Christine began her MMA career in 2008 as the Director of Development. As part of her career move, she will be relocating to Columbia with her husband and two children. Before leaving, Christine assured cadets that even though she is moving on, she will not miss Maroon and Gold or graduation!
Re-Enrollment Time is Coming! We are already preparing for the 2018-19 school year. The enrollment office will be sending out re-enrollment letters on 1 March 2018. Don't delay - families who complete their re-enrollment agreements and submit a deposit prior to 1 April 2018 will secure the 2017-18 tuition rate of $37,100. We will also send out instructions to renew financial aid at a later date. Thinking of You (T.O.Y.) BoxesShow your son you're thinking of him - without worrying that candy will melt or cookies will crumble in the mail. The Parents Committee raises funds for cadet activities by providing a fun box of treats to cadets each month for a reasonable cost. Visit the PC web page or the online payment portal. Be sure to indicate that the payment is for TOY boxes. HandbooksThe Parent and Cadet Handbooks are posted on the Forms Portal of the MMA parent website. It is accessed using your Grades Online username and password. Spring FurloughSpring furlough is around the corner and we need your travel forms! Every cadet must complete a form.
