Welcome, Marquette!

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other - Mother Teresa

With the painful cruelty of inequity and racial injustice magnified by COVID-19, I know that our community is looking for ways to be for and with others. We are all aching to connect in a meaningful way, to truly see others and to be truly seen, to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

I invite you to think differently about what service means this semester. One of the best ways we can serve our community is by keeping each other safe - committing to the Community Pledge and supporting peers who may be feeling isolated or overwhelmed.

A second way to serve is by educating ourselves, engaging in the never-ending process of deepening our understanding of justice, kinship, community, and ourselves. In a few weeks, we will invite you to join the 21 Day Challenge: Black Lives Matter or the Milwaukee Roots Dialogue Series. Stay tuned.

A final way to serve is by supporting our community partners through their volunteer requests. These needs are fluid and evolving - you can stay informed by reading this newsletter or following us on Instagram. Please note that while in-person and virtual service roles are allowed by the university at this time, there are strict guidelines and safety protocols that I personally request your good-faith compliance with.

As always, we would love to hear from you. You can contact the Center for Community Service at mucommunity@marquette.edu.

peace,
Kelly Walker
Director of Community Service

Review Marquette's Fall 2020 policy on undergraduate service

  • All service participation must comply with current federal, state, city, or university health orders and policies
  • Be aware that increased workload in COVID-19, financial pressures, and racial justice work may limit the capacity of community partners to engage volunteers
  • Students are encouraged to take on virtual volunteer roles
  • Students may continue to volunteer in-person if they commit to strict adherence to the policies outlined here. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to strict safety protocols throughout their day-to-day choices and to limit their service to one community site.
  • For more detail, please review the policy here
