Our students have a rich curriculum to look forward to this half term through coaching, subjects, projects and Real World learning placements. In coaching this term Year 9 continue the themes of empowering choices looking at their Already Always Listening Narrative through the lens of Liccle Bit. Year 10 have launched Poetry
Ignite where they will learn a GCSE Poem by heart to practice grit, memorisation and how to empower someone else's words. Year 11 will be working on how to prioritise their workload in order to take a proactive approach to the 15 week run into GCSEs through the book Eat That Frog. Our project offer for Year 9 includes an even more diverse range of projects. Students will be going on trips, music making, dancing, building leadership skills, cooking, designing and making, storytelling, studying classics, exploring the laboratory and thinking like mathematicians. We welcome all of our community to our Year 10 Real World Learning Exhibition, Tuesday 11th February. This will be an opportunity for our students to share their first experience of going out into the world of work. Year 11 Mock ResultsThe Year 11 students are currently sitting their GCSE Mock Examinations. Your child is expected to come into school Wednesday 29th January between 9:00am – 11:00am to collect their mock results. We would like to extend this invite parents as well so you can support your child when they open their envelope. We will follow the same process as the students will experience on the real results day in the summer. The aim is to support your child by giving them an experience as close to the real thing as possible. During this time staff will be available to discuss with the students and parents the results and what pathways these results could open up for your child.
Improving Professionalism As always with a new year we like to reset our expectations of our students. Below is some information regarding key areas of professionalism we would like your support on.Uniform and EquipmentWe believe that coming to school each day with the correct uniform and the correct equipment helps get students ready for learning and for work in the real world. We are having a big push on uniform and equipment. At the start of every day your child will have their uniform checked by their period 1 teacher. Where students do not have the correct uniform they will have a point deducted and will be sent to student support to collect the
correct uniform. If your child comes to school with the incorrect shoes we will loan your child a pair of our school plimsolls/school shoes as a replacement. Please note all black trainers are not permitted as school shoes. Here is a reminder of the uniform:· School 21 blazer with
logo· Plain light grey traditional style knee length skirt. Skirts must not be above the knee· Plain light grey/black trousers (no leggings or jeans)· Plain black opaque tights and white/black socks must be worn with skirts· Black leather/ leather effect shoes, no heels· School
tie· White shirt (which must button up at the neck)· School 21 Cardigan / Jumper· Teal/Purple/Black Plain Hijab (if applicable)The following are NOT part of the school uniform and should NOT be worn:· Leggings or Jeans· Sweatshirts· Polo shirts· Shoes with high
heels/clogs or flip-flop type footwear (during winter, boots can be worn)· Short skirts (above the knee)· Tight-fitting shirtsTrainers are required for PE lessons but must not be worn at any other times.Jewellery (other than a single plain stud), make-up, false eyelashes, nail varnish and false nails are not permitted in school. This is due to numerous problems related to the health and safety of other students and we ask that you do not allow your child to wear them to school. We will allow a grace period to remove false nails until the end of the week.Lateness to School/Lessons and TransitionsThe number of students who arrived late to lessons last term decreased over the term which is pleasing. We are aiming this term to further reduce lateness to school and lessons and having safe corridors for transitions. Any student who arrives late to lessons will lose 1 professionalism point and 3 professionalism
points if they are 5 minutes late or over. There is an expectation for students to be at their lessons for a sharp start at the start of school (8:30am), after break (11:00am/11:20am) and after lunch time (1:30pm/1:50pm). Any students who arrive late to school/to their lessons will be in late lunch detention that day.Last term we also had a few isolated incidents where our corridors were unsafe for small children, pregnant staff and secondary students. We have introduced more visibility of staff and the students who disrupt our corridors will receive a letter home. The expectation of the students on the
corridor is that they walk in level 2, on the left and are mindful of others around them when they are walking.AttendanceAt School 21 we are committed to nurturing and supporting every student. We have an outstanding pastoral team dedicated to ensuring that student behaviour, character and attitudes reflect and support our
school’s values. Excellent student attendance and punctuality are central to our expectations of our students. Research clearly shows that good attendance and punctuality to school are two of the most important factors in students achieving their full potential in education. This term marks the start of our new attendance system to ensure that we continue to promote good attendance and punctuality across all year groups. The main features of our new attendance system are as follows;· Weekly monitoring of every student’s attendance since the start of the school year.· A clear set of actions to respond to any decline in a student’s attendance. · Communication with parents/carers via phone calls, letters and meetings. · Recognition of students with excellent and/or improved attendance.· Coaching conversations to ensure all students
understand the importance of good attendance and punctuality.· We will also continue with our daily monitoring of students’ attendance and contacting home when a student absence has not been reported to us by parents/carers. Parents /Carers can support good attendance by doing the
following:· Ensure your child attends school every day, on time (by 8:25am), equipped and ready to learn. · Do not let your child take time off for a cold, headache, cough or minor complaint.· Ensure the school has up-to-date addresses and telephone numbers for parents/carers and an emergency contact.· Respond to letters or telephone calls regarding attendance and punctuality.· Ensure that medical appointments are made outside of school time (we understand that hospital and specialist appointments may have to occur during school time). If your child is too unwell to attend school or running late, please inform us as soon as possible by calling the school on 0208 262 2121 and pressing Option 1 before 8:30am or via email: attendance@school21.org.uk
Please do not use the info@school21.org.uk email address.Chewing Gum and Sweets Reminders:Chewing gum and sweets are not
permitted at school. Please support the school by reminding your child about this rule. Students found to be chewing gum at school will lose 3 professional points. Parents will be contacted if students repeatedly break this rule. Thank you for your support with this matter. If you do have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Thank you in advance for your continued support. We are firm believers in getting the small things right this gives your child firm foundations to be able to engage fully in our exciting curriculum. We are looking forward to seeing you in 2020 and working closely with you and your children. Best wishes for the rest of the year, we hope it is a good one. Thank you for your continued support.Yours faithfully,The Secondary Team
