U.S. Steps Up Planning for Possible Action in Iran

China proposed stricter rules for apps seeking to use the personal data of residents. Apps must enable options for precise user consent and limit use to essential purposes, among other provisions. The Cyberspace Administration of China is taking public comments on the proposal until Feb. 9. New York-based Torq raised $140 million in a Series D round led by Merlin Ventures. The startup, which makes AI analysis tools for security operations centers, said the new funding puts its valuation at $1.2 billion. 

Meta denies data breach at Instagram. Widespread requests to Instagram users to reset their passwords stem from a now-fixed bug that let hackers send such emails, Instagram said. Claims that data related to 17 million Instagram accounts was leaked aren't true, the company said. "People can disregard these emails and we apologize for any confusion this may have caused," a representative told Bleeping Computer.

Late notice: Cancer patients had their Social Security numbers and other sensitive data breached in an August ransomware attack at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. The university briefed local legislators on the incident last month and said it is working to identify affected individuals.

Deepfake images can erode trust in digital-identity systems by national governments and remote verification processes at banks and other key businesses, the World Economic Forum said. Face swapping and other ploys can undermine know-your-customer measures, the report said, adding that organizations will have to improve detection methods. (InfoSecurity Magazine)

Percentage of CISOs who are at the executive or senior vice president level at firms of $1 billion or more in revenue, according to new research from recruiter Artico Search and training organization IANS. That's up from 34% last year and 33% in 2023 and signals an elevation in importance of the role, Artico said.
