So says Matthew Kelly in The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose. A friend sent an extract of Kelly’s book to me a short while ago and in my few short weeks here at PLC, Kelly’s words have been resonating with me. Coming into the PLC community, I have been struck by the work ethic, selflessness, and commitment of my colleagues and the integrity, focus and diligence of the girls. Ours is an exciting environment where everyone is encouraged to strive for excellence. It is humbling to work in such an atmosphere, and I have already had the opportunity to learn so much from those around me. I was fortunate enough to join in the week of the Year 12 celebrations and was moved by the warm exchanges between teachers and students, their obvious mutual respect for each other, and the poise and accomplishment of those who spoke and performed. This culture of respect and appreciation of excellence was also plain to see in my first Junior School Assembly, where the girls’ celebration of each other’s successes was genuine and heartfelt. Our community is one of aspiration and this is inspiring. Kelly goes on to say, “we all need people in our lives who raise our standards, remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the best version of ourselves.” These people are ubiquitous at PLC and as I accept the challenge, I encourage all members of our community to do the same, seeking inspiration from those we see around us every day. Tomorrow, Friday 30 October, also marks World Teachers' Day and while PLC will be celebrating in a number of ways – some of these are surprises – feel free to download and utlise the resources found here and send them to cande@plc.wa.edu.au - Mr Neil Walker, Deputy Principal - Teaching and Learning Year 6 ExhibitionOn Wednesday evening, we celebrated the learning of our Year 6 students throughout 2020 with a PYP exhibition. As I wrote last week, the exhibition is the culmination of the PYP experience, and provides each student the opportunity to demonstrate the depth of learning that the PYP allows. This year has a different look as the students have created statement pieces to reflect each inquiry. There are no boards with masses of text, as the knowledge is held within each student and they can articulate the knowledge they have gained, as well as the related concepts and issues. I know the two students I mentored have completed an abundance of reading and writing and have learned a great deal. When asked, they will eloquently articulate their inquiry and, importantly for me, they are able to demonstrate their depth of learning and the intricacy of the issue that exists in our complex world. My congratulations to the students for their tremendous work. My thanks to the parents, family members, members of the community, interviewees, and staff, who have all assisted and guided the students through this journey. You are welcome to view the photos captured from the night here. Junior School Co-curricular 2021We are presently reviewing the Co-curricular offering in the Junior School for 2021. We are pleased to announce that there will be an offering that will allow Kindergarten to Year 6 children to be supervised until 5.30 pm Monday to Thursday. We are also looking at how we can build flexibility in the offering and aim to have the timetable for Semester 1 2021 in place by 2020, to allow families to plan ahead. Festival of Science 2020 and OCA STEM RoomPLC staff have been working hard to plan an exceptional Festival of Science (FoS) for 2020. We will have two wonderful science-filled days next Thursday and Friday. Parents and guardians were sent a variety of information about FoS on Monday. The FoS coincides with the formal opening of the Old Collegian Association’s STEM Room at Assembly. This room has been funded by the OCA and will provide all students a wonderful space to engage in their STEM learning. - Mr Richard Wright, Head of Junior School Junior School Upcoming EventsChapel Years 3 to 6Date: Wednesday 4 November Festival of ScienceDate: Thursday 5 November and Friday 6 November Junior School Assembly - Year 1 hostingDate: Friday 6 November OCA Junior School STEM Room Launch & Morning TeaDate: Friday 6 November Creative Arts & Technology ExhibitionLast Thursday saw the opening of our Creative Arts and Technology Exhibition.
