Course Focus:
Youth Arts Project Management

Our six day Youth Arts Management course is uniquely desigend to equip professionals with everything they need to run a successful youth arts project, from inception to evaluation. Our next YAM course takes place in Southampton from 17 May 2018. More info.

Previous course attendee Clare Hankinson, from Fabrica, reflects on her experience:

“Taking place over three months at Cockpit Arts, London, it was a chance to take time out of the day-to-day duties at Fabrica, and concentrate on this more strategic approach. Over this time, we covered planning and budgeting, marketing, fundraising and evaluation. The course also became an incredibly supportive network of peers who are working across the arts and with a broad range of young audiences. That in itself was brilliant and we have kept in touch – I hope maybe I will partner with some of these new contacts in the future."

Policy Update:
Working with the Prevent Duty

We have designed our new one day Working Together with Prevent course to take the fear out of the Prevent agenda, and help you begin to apply it to your own policies and practice. Later this year, we will be delivering this course in both Gateshead and London.

But what is the Prevent duty, and why is it important that those in the arts and cultural sector undertake training?

Prevent is part of the government’s counter terrorism strategy, designed to provide an introduction to risks of radicalisation and the roles involved in supporting those at risk. It is recommended that all organisations working to support children and young people undertake Prevent training, and there is a free e-learning training package available on the government website.

Despite the free training offered by the government, many organisations working with the arts, cultural and heritage sectors have expressed confusion around how to implement Prevent within their settings. Our sector works with children and young people in a wide range of contexts, and understanding which steps needs to be taken to ensure compliance, report concerns and share the British Values at the heart of Prevent isn’t straightforward. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect young people from exploitation and radicalization – but how can we build confidence in our sectors’ ability to form part of the solution?

Introducing the Artswork Essentials Package

Wednesday 16 May, Tuesday 10 July and Tuesday 25th September

10am - 4.15pm

Cockpit Arts, London

This year we’ve launched the Artswork Essentials Package to prepare arts and culture professionals for anything, when working with children and young people.

Three separate courses come together to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of their rights and responsibilities when it comes to protecting the young people they work with from harm, and enhancing their experience for the better.

As an attendee, you will navigate the nitty-gritty of current Child Protection and Prevent legislation, getting to the heart of its relevance to your work. Our trainers provide expertise in how to implement best practice in these areas, along with offering tips and tools for championing Equality and Diversity in line with Arts Council England's Creative Case for Diversity.

By booking a place on our Essentials Package you will save £55 on the cost of booking all three courses seperately. Organisations and individuals operating in the South East can make an even greater saving through our Bridge subsidy rate (see right).

Make the most of a unique opportunity to ensure your organisation is prepared, informed and clearly demonstrating its commitment to these vital areas of policy and practice by booking your place today.

“The need for powerful arts programmes has not depleted. The need to transform our education system is as urgent, if not more so, than it ever was.” (Sir Ken Robinson, Creativity and Life Chances Conference)

Looking back: Artswork's Creativity and Life Chances Conference

In November 2017, Artswork hosted its Creativity and Life Chances conference at Euston’s Wellcome Collection. Following this, delegates, staff and special guests gathered to celebrate a milestone in Artswork’s history: its 30th birthday. Both the conference and the after-event presented great opportunities for people to expand their understanding of arts and culture and its benefits to the wellbeing of the under-25s, as they develop and grow into adulthood.

Our very own Founding Chair, Sir Ken Robinson, beamed in via live video link from L.A. to deliver the keynote speech and talk about how we must continuing fighting the good fight for great arts and culture for the under 25s (and indeed beyond into adulthood), the world over. He explained that education organisations including schools and “certainly governments” have for a very long time not recognised the urgency with which “the arts shouldn’t be seen as some exotic addenda to education”.

A full write up of the conference, including video and audio of keynote speeches, can be found on our website.
