Lake Hugh Muntz Update

Phoslock Application Commenced

As part of the City’s Budget process, I sought funding for an application of Phoslock® across the whole of the lakebed and I am delighted that an amount of $280,000 has been allocated to implement this initiative.

Some residents will recall that a trial of Phoslock® was conducted in 2018 but it did not deliver the hoped-for complete solution to the algal bloom issue. Scientific and practical evaluation of this methodology over the intervening three years gives some cause for optimism but it must be acknowledged that there is no certainty at all of a lasting elimination of algal blooms.

As a reminder, Phoslock® is modified bentonite clay and it has undergone rigorous testing by numerous ecological organisations and is certified as safe for humans, animals and the environment.
It works by binding the nutrients which the algae require to grow and is used in water bodies that have high concentrations of phosphorus.

We are allowing two weeks for the application which remains dependent on weather and other circumstances. The lake cannot be used for recreation purposes during that period. A Phoslock® company representative will be present on site each day during the application to ensure proper procedures and safety protocols

This initiative will be intensively monitored over an extended period to assess its impact.

We will continue our efforts to maintain Lake Hugh Muntz as a healthy ecosystem.
