Cyber Startup Ent Raises $100 Million in Seed Funding

Hello. Cybersecurity startup Ent has raised $100 million in seed funding to help companies gauge unusual behavior on desktops, laptops and other devices.

Ent's tools run as a lightweight agent on the endpoint, looking for a combination of behavioral signals, such as which applications are being used or what files were opened. Any off-kilter activity triggers an assessment of user intent. Read our full story.

Tech found aboard dark-fleet tankers captured by the U.S. could let bad actors cause an explosion or oil spill. The ships are often loaded with high-bandwidth communications systems that keep them connected to the internet at all times. They run remote desktop applications such as AnyDesk that let owners and handlers control a ship’s systems from afar. (WSJ)

  • “What we didn’t know until these boardings was what type of cyber risks were aboard these ships,” said Rear Adm. Jason Tama, head of the Coast Guard’s Cyber Command.

Heart-monitor maker discloses cyberattack. San Francisco-based iRhythm Holdings said proprietary company data and patient information were stolen in a cyberattack detected June 8. iRhythm hasn't identified any impact to its products, clinical or medical device systems or connections to customers, it said in a regulatory filing. The company hasn't said how much data was taken but called the incident material. 

Flagstar Bank agreed to pay $31.5 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over two data breaches that occurred in 2021. More than two million people were affected. (Top Class Actions) 

  • Flagstar was one of several companies enveloped in a December 2020 hack of a file-transfer tool from tech provider Accellion. 

European Union cyber specialists are now available to help Ukraine respond to cyberattacks, the European Commission said Monday. Under the EU Cybersecurity Reserve, members can call on each other to help with large-scale hacks and digital disruptions. (Brussels Times)

Election deepfakes: Political campaigns are using AI in campaign ads to elevate candidates and attack opponents, fueling concerns that the wave of fake content will undermine the midterm elections. About 30 states have laws prohibiting election-related deepfakes, but digital content researchers say enforcement is tough because of First Amendment protections. (WSJ)
