Click here Dear Friend of PLC New Music Centre and Additional Boarding FacilitiesAll parents would have today received an email about the PLC Master Plan and the exciting plans we have for a new Music Centre, additional boarding facilities and extra playground space for Junior School students. As I wrote in Links earlier this month, the School Master Planning process has involved extensive consultation with parents, staff and students over the past 18 months and has helped to identify the Music Centre as a priority capital works project. Concurrently, the growing wait-list of families wanting boarding places helped to make the decision to refurbish Finlayson House to accommodate 22 Year 7 boarders from next year. Over the coming July school holidays work will start on relocating the Music Department to a temporary Music Village on the Junior School hard courts with the aim to make this transition as seamless as possible when the girls return to school in Term 3. More information about the Master Plan and these initial projects can be found on our PLC website. Inter-House Athletics CarnivalIt was fabulous to join the girls on Tuesday at this year’s Senior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival. In true PLC style, our girls refused to let the wet weather disrupt their day and all competed fiercely, but with excellent sportsmanship, to make the event a great success. All of our staff, but particularly those in the PE Department, put in an enormous effort to ensure the smooth running of all of our carnivals and I am very thankful for their dedication and support. It is because of their professionalism that they were devastated to discover a mistake in the calculations for Year 12 Champion and Runner Up girl. Unfortunately, the result for Riley Hutton’s long-jump result was entered in the data system as 3.62m when it should have been 4.62m. The incorrect entry meant she was placed ninth in that event instead of second. When the overall scores were recalculated, it meant Riley was the rightful Champion Girl. I look forward to awarding Riley her medal at Assembly on tomorrow morning. This does not take away from the amazing effort of Runner-Up Champion Girl Desiree Rafferty, nor the excellent achievements of Isadora Rakich, Tash Bowen and Kiera Dunhill who were originally named joint Runners-Up. I would like to thank each of these girls for their maturity and understanding when I explained this error to them. Thankfully, the data entry mistake did not change the House Point overall results. Ferguson was the clear winner of the day. After adjusting the results with the correct points, Ferguson led with 1171 points (previously 1172); McNeil – 1105 (1099); Baird – 982 (982); Stewart – 941 (942); Summers – 867 (873); Carmichael – 811 (812) and Ross – 557 (555). Congratulations to all of the girls for participating. Child ProtectionPLC takes the care of your children very seriously. At the start of the year I conducted three, one hour, training sessions which were mandatory for all PLC staff to attend. These sessions covered the following topics:
You, and your children are encouraged to speak with any staff member regarding a child protection concern. We also have Child Protection Officers who are available for you to speak with should you have any concerns or questions. PLC Child Protection Officers

Thank you for continuing to work closely with us in ensuring all children in our School are safe and well supported as they learn, grow and flourish. - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Saturday 23 JuneHead of the River, Champion Lakes Monday 2 July - Friday 20 JulyJunior School E-magination Winter Holiday Club Sunday 5 AugustYear 12 Mothers Moray Campsite Sleepover Thursday 16 AugustSenior School Arts Day, save the date Saturday 25 AugustFarm2Fork, save the date Friday 26 OctoberOpen Garden Day, save the date The theme of NAIDOC week this year is ‘Because of her, we can’. It highlights the contributions that Aboriginal women have made and the active and significant roles they play at all levels of society. One such Aboriginal woman is Shirley Smith, a Wiradjuri woman born in 1924 in south eastern Australia. She began her lifelong welfare work after her brother’s imprisonment. She received the nickname ‘Mum Shirl’ because she pretended to be the mother of the others prisoners who had no one to visit them. Seeing the good that her visits did, the Department of Corrective Services eventually allowed her access to all its prisoners. Outside the prison system, particularly in the Redfern community, she found shelter, food and friendship for those recently arrived in the city. Mum Shirl was drawn to people who were struggling, and worked tirelessly for the vulnerable, especially children, single mothers, the destitute, the homeless and the alcoholics. With no facilities, she took many of these people into her home and, over the years, she raised over 60 children. She helped to found the Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern, where she was later employed and continued her valuable community work. Because Mum Shirl lived and worked among the people she helped, she never had much money, but somehow managed never to turn anyone away. She said God gave her the strength and that God kept providing. Mum Shirl was awarded an ‘Order of the British Empire’ in 1977 and an ‘Order of Australia’ in 1985 for her service and community work. She died in 1998, aged 73. As we remember Mum Shirl and celebrate her achievements and her unwavering passion to serve, we also celebrate our strong sense of community here at PLC, and with the Indigenous students we are inspired to continue Mum Shirl’s legacy of service and together to work for a better future for all. Whenever we think of vulnerability, how many of us think of fear, shame, defenseless or exposed. The dictionary definition of the word certainly implies negative connotations to the emotion. But, what about the good kind of vulnerability? The kind that allows us show others who we are, our awesome flaws, our flawsomes, in order to make connections with others. These connections are why we are here. Connections with others are what gives us purpose and meaning to our lives. Dr. Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame and empathy. Her research began with a study of connection and the notion that connection gives us purpose and meaning to our lives. While gathering her data, she asked her participants about connection but, instead, they talked about disconnection and the shame of not being worthy of connection. What underpinned this shame was the feeling of not being enough, not good enough, smart enough, rich enough, thin enough, funny enough…I hope it’s not begrudgery, an intrinsic part of my overly critical Irish psyche, but I hated vulnerability and the associated shame of not being enough. I am still learning to embrace it and be courageous in my endeavors and know that I am enough (some might say I’m too much!). Dr. Brown discovered that there were other participants who did believe that they were enough and that they were worthy of love and belonging and also worthy of connection. So, what made this group different? The participants who believed that they were enough had a strong sense of courage. They had the courage to acknowledge their flaws and to embrace their imperfections. They embraced their vulnerability, exposed their flaws and their imperfections, and still knew that they were worthy of love and belonging. Dr. Martin Seligman, the founder of Positive Psychology, identified six character strengths associated with happiness and positive wellbeing for our children: 1. Wisdom and knowledge When I read through this list, most of the strengths seem obvious: wouldn’t every parent want to raise their children to be kind and compassionate or to think of others and be fair? However, how many of us have thought of teaching our children to be courageous and brave in a way of ensuring their happiness and wellbeing? We might look at our perfect children and believe that our job is to keep them perfect. But, really, that’s not it. As Dr. Brown suggests, we need to teach our children to be courageous and brave and embrace their vulnerability, to let them know that they are imperfect, and they are wired for struggle, but they are worthy and most importantly, they are loved. That’s our job. - Victoria Kelleher, Deputy Head of Senior School (Years 7 & 8) Term 3 Co-curricular Activities Now OpenEnrolment in Term 3 Co-curricular activities is now open on our new online enrolment page at home.plc.wa.edu.au To enrol, please click on this link and select Senior School Co-curricular.
