New York Attorney General Picks Up Zelle Lawsuit Abandoned by Trump

Hello. New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing the owner of payments service Zelle for allegedly failing to protect its users from fraud even as it knew of security design flaws. 

The lawsuit filed Wednesday said Early Warning Services failed to include critical safety features when it launched Zelle in 2017, allowing scammers to steal more than $1 billion from users.

Early Warning, which is a coalition of banks including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo, blasted the suit, calling it a “political stunt.” Read the full story.

Chip fixes: Chip makers AMD, Intel and Nvidia put out patches this week for dozens of vulnerabilities that in some cases could let hackers tamper with or expose data and escalate privileges once they break into related systems. Intel issued 34 patches, AMD 10 and Nvidia six. (SecurityWeek)

For sale? Discussions are underway for cybersecurity company BeyondTrust Software to be sold by owner Francisco Partners, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Francisco Partners bought BeyondTrust, which makes access-management tools, in 2018. Terms of that deal weren't disclosed.

Norway's top cyber officials blame Russia-linked hackers for a cyberattack on a Norwegian dam. Valves were opened for about four hours, sending water gushing over the dam as a result of the hack, which occurred in April and was disclosed Wednesday. (Politico) 

Five more states report disruptions to food stamp systems, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said, leading to concerns that the outages are the result of a concerted cyberattack. Georgia's SNAP systems have been down for two weeks due to a hack in late July. Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Oklahoma and Virginia have reported similar outages, the USDA said.

  • Cyber staff in Georgia and at Conduent, which runs the tech for the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, have been working to restore systems since July 28. (11 Alive)

Brett Hoffman joined SpartanNash as CISO as the grocery company prepares to be bought by C&S Wholesale Grocers in a $1.77 billion deal. Hoffman reports to newly hired CIO Ed Rybicki. Hoffman was previously CISO at consulting firm Inspire Security Solutions. 

  • Ryan Davis joined tech contractor New Charter Technologies as CISO, leaving IBM after serving as CISO of its internet tech business unit, NS1. 
  • Jim Desmond is the new CISO at background-check company HireRight in Nashville. Previously, Desmond was chief security officer at Assurion, a tech support provider.
  • Diana Kelley joined cyber company Noma Security as CISO. She was most recently CISO at Protect AI, with senior technology leadership roles at Microsoft, IBM and Symantec. (City Business) Noma last month raised $100 million in a Series B round.
