Music has the power to bring people together

Dean Stevenson’s Facing North is a truly remarkable piece of art that combines people, place and performance in a way not seen in any Ten Days on the Island Festival.

Dean has written music inspired by the history and landscape of the north west coast and is utilising the wealth of talent in the region to bring it to life on Sunday 12 March at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre.

We’d like you to meet some of the amazing musicians involved with the project….

Lynne

"What a privilege it is to be part of the creation process of new music that represents the sounds, sights and feel of our special part of Tasmania".

Lynne Price is a founding member of the Cradle Coast Orchestra. She has been playing her violin with them for 27 years, contributing to what she describes as "an extraordinary community togetherness without pretence or affectation." She is thrilled to be part of Ten Days on the Island's flagship community music event.

Phil

"I'm a life member of the Wynyard Concert Band and I also play in Wynyard Big Band, the  Burnie Concert Band and the Cradle Coast Orchestra. So that's Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings taken up with rehearsals!"

Meet Phil. It's fair to say that Phil breathes music along with that fresh coastal air. Phil has been a resident of the North West Coast for 47 years and is excited to be playing his trumpet as part of Dean Stevenson's ambitious community extravaganza, Facing North. He believes that audiences will "leave feeling entertained and sustained in their belief in this community".

Carmel

"I just love to play my saxophone with people who love music as much as I do..."

This is Carmel Allen. She has played Alto Saxophone with the Burnie Concert Band since she was twelve. This year she is one of over 100 musicians to play under the tutelage of Tasmanian composer Dean Stevenson for the musical initiative that has everyone on the Cradle Coast humming.

Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate the north west coast like never before!

Frida and Derek

Who knew Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and English filmmaker Derek Jarman would have enough in common to see some of Tasmania’s most loved gardens come to life with plays about their lives? Well Blue Cow Theatre Company and leading Tasmanian thetre director Robert Jarman (no relation to Derek!) certainly did.

Both were known for their love of vibrant colour and gardens and Frida and Derek celebrates these two fascinating characters in a performance piece of vibrant beauty.

Ten Days on the Island invites you to share their stories at Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Claremont House, Hatherley House in Launceston and Vilarett Gardens in Moltema in what will be a great night out for lovers of art, popular culture and gardens.

Van Diemen's Band

Van Diemen’s Band is an exciting new Tasmanian chamber orchestra dedicated to the historically informed performance of music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Made up of some of the nation’s most highly respected early music specialists, VDB combines musicological research and high-level performance by musicians who, between them, have many decades of baroque music-making experience.

We are really excited about VDB making their debut performances as part of Ten Days on the Island Festival 2017. Tasmania deserves its own Baroque orchestra!
