Letter from the Chair As you may have already noticed, our Department now officially has a new name - The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. This name, adopted by faculty members last Spring, better reflects the make-up of our Department. The addition shines light on an important program frequented by many of our students. While headed by Dr. Inge Genee, Linguistics is also a field of interest to other members of our Department, especially Dr. Alain Takam who is a socio-linguist. Dr. Abby McMeekin and Dr. Janet Luz Ospina who also carry out research in applied linguistics to varying degrees. In terms of other news, this past summer, the Department said good-bye to our Administrative Assistant, Jessica Goodrider Loewen. While we will miss Jessica, we know that she will remain in touch and wish her all the best for the future. Kari Anderson is our new administrative assistant and began working for us at the beginning of October. We are pleased to have Kari who is quickly learning the ropes, while spending half her time in Indigenous Studies. We once again have a new French Assistant - Félicie Sonnet. We are delighted to welcome her to our Department and will do our best to make her stay in Lethbridge enjoyable. Apart from these major items, we highlight the activities undertake by the Department as a whole and by individual faculty members. We are currently reaching out to Alumni and would ultimately like to feature a past or current student in this Newsletter, which is about keeping everyone up-to-date on developments in Modern Languages and Linguistics. All the best for the Fall 2018 semester! - Steve Welcome to the Department Kari Anderson - Originally from Calgary, Kari went to Mount Royal University and has been in various administrative roles for 15 years. She enjoys exploring the coulees, baking, painting badly, spending time with family, local music and theatre, as well as volunteering around the city. She also has a cat and a 12 year old son. Félicie Sonnet - Félicie hails from the Champagne, Ardenne region in France and precisely, from Aube. She likes literature, cooking, travel and hiking. She completed a degree in foreign language, literature and civilisation (English/Spanish). She is currently working on a Masters in French Foreign Language Acquisition. Welcome Back - HGU Professorial Exchange Dr. Beth Gerwin
In August, Dr. Beth Gerwin returned from teaching Canadian Culture at Hokkai Gakuen University in Sapporo, Japan. During the Fall, she looked after Dr. Akaischi who spent the semester at U of L with his wife and children. Dr. Gerwin is the third professor from Modern Languages and Linguistics to participate in the HGU/UofL exchange program.
Sessional Instruction We would like to welcome back two sessional instructors this semester: Sylvie Lebon who is teaching French 1500. Francine Young (Coordinator of the French Language Centre) who is teaching both French 1000 and French 2000. Academic and Teaching Activities - Spring/Summer 2018 Stabilizing Indigenous Language Symposium In collaboration with the Peigan Board of Education and colleagues from the Department of Indigenous Studies, Dr. Genee organized and hosted the very successful 25th Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium (SILS2018) on campus from June 7-9. This influential symposium had been organized in Canada only twice before. It was a great honour for us to host the anniversary event! Almost 250 local, national and international delegates participated in the ceremony, keynote speeches, breakout sessions and excursions for three full days. The organizers are now working on a book of Proceedings reflecting the variety of different perspectives on Indigenous language maintenance, revitalization and reclamation from all over the world with a focus on North-America. The website is still actively maintained at www.sils2018.ca Spanish Summer 2018 Immersion Program Spanish Summer Immersion Program Dr. Luz Janeth Ospina The Spanish Summer Immersion Program in La Rioja was a great success. Being part of an International Summer School was a unique experience for the U of L students. They met students from 10 countries around the world. The host university offered an excellent academic program. Our students enjoyed the classes and were very engaged. They also loved the field trips and many traveled on their own. The location of Universidad de la Rioja was ideal. Logroño is a small city, but offers all the facilities of a modern capital with human size.
