Family Docs Are The Most Trusted Source of Flu Shot Advice Resident’s research indicates patients are more likely to get influenza vaccination following recommendation from a family physician. Poulami Banerjee wanted to do at least one research project during her residency. She achieved her goal during her first year of residency, and her work earned her the 2018 College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) resident Scholarly Achievement Award. Banerjee chose to investigate a topic of interests to health care professionals across the North America: influenza vaccination rates.

The Resident Research Portal is Now Available! The purpose of the portal is to connect family medicine residents with research faculty members. Faculty members are able to post research opportunities and projects that residents can be involved in or tor provide research mentorship to a resident. Residents are able to post their research interests with the aim of connecting with a faculty member with similar interests and a willingness to mentor the resident in his/her project. U of A to Support Major Concussion Research Initiative Dr. Connie Lebrun will be representing Alberta on the clinical subcommittee of the Surveillance in High Schools to Reduce Concussion in Youth (SHRed Concussions) research project. SHRed, which is led by PI Carolyn Emery, PhD at the University of Calgary, received a $12 million dollar grant from the National Football League’s Play Smart. Play Safe initiative. Additional University of Alberta researchers involved are Dr. Jackie Whittaker from the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, Dr. Martin Mrazik from the Faculty of Education and Dr. Don Voaklander from the School of Public Health and Dr. Kathy Belton from the Injury Prevention Centre. Congratulations to EMPRSS Founders on TEC Edmonton Award Dr. Mike Kolber and Nicole Olivier have received an innovation award from TEC Edmonton for creating EMPRSS (Electronic Medical Procedure Reporting Systems). EMPRSS is an electronic data collection system and service team that aims to improve patient outcomes and generate health system efficiencies by providing
quality metrics to clinicians. EMPRSS was established as a spin off company by Dr. Michael Kolber.

Congratulations to Resident As Teacher (RAT) Study on Poster Award Congratulations to Dr. Lillian Au and co-investigators Oksana Babenko, Sudha Koppula, and Olga Szafran on receiving an education research poster award at the Family Medicine Innovations in Research and Education Day at the Family Medicine Forum conference on November 14, 2018. The poster was on the
“Impact of Resident As Teacher Program on Family Medicine Residents’ Interest in Teaching”. The Section of Researchers of the CFPC celebrates the work of research teams by recognizing their posters.

CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article
Call for Submissions & Reviewers The CFPC Outstanding Family Medicine Research Article award recognizes the best research article published in a national or international journal during the preceding year based on original family medicine research carried out by a College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) member. Eligibility criteria: At least one member of the research team must be a CFPC member, either as the principal investigator or a key member of the research team, who has been in good standing for at least one year. The research must be relevant to family medicine. Only the final version of a published article is eligible and it must be submitted for the year in which the final version was published. Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Care of the Elderly Research Team Receives CIHR Grant Congratulations to Dr. Jasneet Parmar, Dr. Lesley Charles, Dr. Bonnie Dobbs, and team for receiving a CIHR Planning and Dissemination Grant on the project entitled Health Workforce Education and Training Resources to Recognize and Support Family Caregivers of Seniors in Care. The goal of this initiative is to develop education and training for healthcare professionals to be able to identify individuals who are caregivers to seniors in care and subsequently provide needed support to those
caregivers.The grant for this one-year project is in the amount of $18,000.00 and the application was ranked by the Institute of Aging as #3rd out of 12 applications. The research team will be joined by 32 participants from across Canada and in the Netherlands and UK.
