UCHICAGO MEDICINE UPDATES

The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine was ranked No. 17 in Best Medical Schools for Research, and No. 20 in Best Medical Schools for Primary Care in the nation.

The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine was ranked No. 17 in Best Medical Schools for Research, and No. 20 in Best Medical Schools for Primary Care in the nation.

This year, the University of Chicago Medical Center ranked in ten of our clinical specialties which also made the top 50 list, including Ear, Nose, and Throat!

The University of Chicago Medicine is among a shrinking list of top U.S. hospitals to have earned 21 consecutive A’s in hospital safety from the Leapfrog Group. UChicago Medicine is now one of only 22 hospitals nationwide to get an A in all 18 Leapfrog surveys and remains the only hospital in Chicago to achieve the top grade every time.

The University of Chicago Department of Surgery's 2022-2023 Annual Report "Behind the Mask" is here! Click through to hear from our amazing faculty and get a peak into their lives outside of caring for patients. Featuring our own Ted Imbery, MD.

UChicago Medicine is ranked nationally in US News and World Report 2021-22

We Need YOUR Help!

We are grateful to you for your continued support and are humbled by being recognized in many surveys as a team dedicated to delivering world-class care while advancing medicine through cutting edge research.  Although every rating is imperfect, the sustained recognition of the Section of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and its faculty demonstrates the commitment and expertise of our team to deliver the best care with a focus on excellent patient outcomes and innovation.  Given our dedication, we are confident that we will continue to provide the highest-quality care for our patients.

Many of you will have the opportunity to participate in the USNWR survey, and I urge you to complete it when it becomes available in February or March. Doximity is the only way to participate in the USNWR “Best Hospitals” survey online.  To receive full credit, you will need to complete all 5 fields of the online survey.

Thank you again for your continued support!

GROWTH & EXPANDING ACCESS TO CARE

The UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center is made up of more than 200 renowned physicians and scientists. We are one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Illinois – the gold standard for cancer programs that are earned by the nation’s top cancer centers. Our program is nationally ranked in cancer care by U.S. News and World Report and has received the top accreditation from the prestigious American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.

The University of Chicago Medicine broke ground on a new two-story, 130,000-square-foot multispecialty care center & micro-hospital in Northwest Indiana for what will be the academic health system’s largest offsite facility & its first free-standing building in Indiana.

The University of Chicago along with AdventHealth have formed a joint venture called UChicago Medicine AdventHealth. Combining the expertise and resources of both organizations to bring academic medicine into the western suburbs.

A record number of University of Chicago Medicine physicians were named to Chicago Magazine’s Top Docs list. These experts were selected by their peers for their clinical excellence, bedside manner, education, and board certification. A number of our UChicago Otolaryngology physicians were added to the list.

Startup OrixDX has developed a novel saliva-based molecular test to detect and diagnose oral cancer earlier, thereby improving patient outcomes and saving lives. The Chicago-based company was formed based on a decade of research in the field of liquid biopsy and cancer genomics at the University of Chicago and John Hopkins by top physicians and scientists including co-founders Nishant Agrawal, MD, Rifat Hasina, Ph.D., and Evgeny Izumchenko, Ph.D. The startup company won first place in the Polsky Center’s New Venture Challenge, the signature venture competition for MBA students at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Nishant Agrawal, MD, was featured in Forbes magazine in an article titled “Going Beyond Target or Mechanism of Disease: Disruptive Innovations in Drug Delivery Systems” by Alex Zhavoronkov, Ph.D. This article highlights how along with a multidisciplinary team, Dr. Agrawal published the results of Privo’s preclinical and clinical studies using PRV111 treatment. The treatment, which has the potential to revolutionize the field, consisted of a topical mucoadhesive cisplatin delivery system.

We are also thrilled to report a thriving allergy practice, led by Nadia Caballero, MD, who brings the full range of allergy diagnosis and treatment, including sublingual immunotherapy via tablets or drops.

Dr. Pinto’s research “Olfactory Dysfunction Predicts 5-Year Mortality in Older Adults” was featured in The Washington Post when he was interviewed for an article titled “Covid led to smell problems for many. Seniors are especially vulnerable.” His work was also mentioned in several other articles such as the Talker’s “How Alzheimer’s could be detected years before symptoms begin” and Daily Mail’s “How a Sudden Loss of Smell Could Be a Sign of Dementia – Not Covid.”

Dr. Jayant Pinto was invited to lecture at the Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health at The Bloomberg School of Public Health at John Hopkins University. He also worked to present his findings at the Clinical Olfactory Working Group (COWoG) in Varese, Italy.

RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS CORNER

Our resident program is comprised of 13 residents, all of whom are exposed to a diverse clinical experience of over 2000 surgical cases over the 5 years of training. The department fosters mentorship opportunities for the residents and medical students to experience subspecialties in otolaryngology. Our highly trained physicians work alongside medical students to provide support and direction in their studies. We aim to train future otolaryngologists of varied backgrounds to become leaders and enhance diverse representation in our field.
