News from the Chair

Welcome to the September edition of QEMRF Update.

Since our last edition QEMRF Grants Round 22 has closed. I am delighted that we received 19 grant applications representing increasing enthusiasm and capacity for clinical research within the Emergency Medicine workforce.

The work of the various expert review committees is invaluable and I would like to take the opportunity to again thank all involved, including a number of recent new appointments, for their contribution. I also congratulate QEMRF's research team for their tireless work in ensuring a smooth and efficient grants management process.

The commitment by the Queensland Government to QEMRF through funding from the Department of Health demonstrates an appreciation for the vital contribution good clinical research can make to improving safety, quality and efficiency of emergency medicine care delivery.

The return on this investment over the last 6 years can be measured across a range of parameters but most importantly we are beginning to see research methodology being incorporated into our clinical medicine ensuring that there is real time translation of research outcomes into changing the way we deliver services in our emergency departments.

The QEMRF Board are currently negotiating renewal of the funding agreement with the Department and I hope we will have the opportunity to leverage off the proven track record of QEMRF to provide a greater opportunity for clinical research by emergency medicine clinicians across the pre-hospital and hospital workforce throughout Queensland.

The results achieved through QEMRF funded research are significant and we congratulate QEMRF funded researchers and committee members on excellent outcomes. We look forward to reporting on these in the QEMRF Annual Report 2013/14 due to be issued later this year.

I am sure you will be delighted to learn that both Carla Baldwin and Jean Delaney are now proud mums - Carla to daughter Ella and Jean to son Jack. We congratulate both Carla and Jean on their delightful new additions.

I encourage you to Save the Date for the QEMRF Grant Awards Ceremony 12 November 2014 as we take the opportunity to highlight the successful grant applications and update you on the progress of QEMRF.

Introducing QEMRF's Research Support Network, managed by Lisa van den Berg

QEMRF is delivering a state-wide Research Support Network (RSN) to support QEMRF researchers and build capacity across the state.

The QEMRF Research Support Network aims to provide researcher support across a network of Queensland Hospitals.  The network will build collaboration capacity and coordinate data collection for multi-site, state-wide and national research projects.

A Research Support Network "Next Steps" Forum was held in August with representatives from Queensland Emergency Departments. The forum explored the RSN structure and resource requirements, 12 month and 3 yearly performance indicators and formed a RSN Working Group. The Working Group will provide advice and guidance in regards the RSN moving forward.

We are delighted to welcome Lisa van den Berg as Manager of QEMRF's Research Support Network. Lisa will be responsible for overseeing the network and placing Research Coordinators across Queensland public hospitals to support QEMRF funded researchers, and building new research capacity.
