NEWSLETTER - 12 July 2017 CONTENTS SPOTLIGHT - GREAT BRITAIN: ONE OF THE BEST SPOTLIGHT "GREAT BRITAIN, ONE OF THE BEST Matt Hancock, British Minister of State for Digital's speech from his recent visit to Paris on 10th July and the 'Rencontres Économiques' in Aix en Provence on 8th July 2017 In every era, when a big new technology is invented, we are challenged to think fresh about how to make the technology work for us, in a way that improves the quality of people's lives. Just as new technologies can bring great benefits, they also can throw up risks. It’s no different with digital technology. Recently, Britain has seized the huge opportunities of the growing tech industry. We have become the undisputed European hub, with twice as much investment in tech as any other European country, and a new record £5.6bn investment in tech in London in the past six months. New technologies have created 3.5 million new jobs since 2001, spread right across the country. Last year, more than two thirds of UK tech investment was outside London, which helps maintain our position as a world leader. Today, we are a world-leading digital economy with particular strengths in artificial intelligence, FinTech, GovTech, gaming, and cyber security. London has, for instance, more people working in FinTech than any other city in the world, standing at 44,000 in 2016, and the UK’s cyber security workforce has grown by 160 per cent since 2011. And the most exciting developments in our creative industries - one of our greatest strengths - are being driven by advances in technology such as virtual reality to produce ever more exciting film, TV and music. We should take it as a compliment that other countries are copying many of our ideas. We should also welcome it. Stronger digital growth in Paris, Tel Aviv and Lisbon benefits the UK. Today I’m visiting Station F, the new start-up hub in Paris similar to those in Britain, in Manchester, London, Edinburgh and elsewhere. Some people say we should see French efforts to modernise their economy and build a digital hub as a threat. I don’t agree. When our neighbours and allies grow, it benefits us all. It’s not a zero sum game, and I look forward to working with my new French counterpart on what we can do to make both of our digital industries stronger. .... THE SUCCESS OF THE SUMMER GARDEN PARTY The 29th June 2017 marked the return of the Summer Garden Party, one of the Chamber’s most successful and luxurious events. In the beautiful Chancery gardens of the British Embassy, just a few doors down from M. Macron himself, guests gathered to enjoy delicious food and even better company. Amongst the delights offered by caterer Cirette were Mediterranean style king prawns, foie gras millefeuille and adventurous popping candy creations for desert. The delicacies were accompanied by the best of Franco-British boissons, with Champagne, Pimms and Gin taking centre stage. The first delivery phase of the Exhibition Centre will take place in 2019. The future International Gastronomy and Wine Exhibition Centre's project house opened its doors on 25th March in the chapel of the former general hospital. UPCOMING EVENTS SEPTEMBER RENTRÉE EVENTS SME BREAKFAST AT THE CHAMBER INTERGENERATIONAL MANAGEMENT VAT BREXIT BREAKFAST RENTREE RECEPTION AMBASSADOR'S BREAKFAST BRIEFING RECENT EVENTS AMBASSADOR'S BREAKFAST BRIEFING Dr Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade was a special guest at our Ambassador’s Breakfast Briefing event on Friday 7th July at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Paris. The Briefing proved to be very interactive with several pertinent questions. After recent uncertaincy, Dr Liam Fox reassured business men and women of a strong trade partnership between Britain and France. This prestigious event is hosted by the British Ambassador to France, who shares his insights on current affairs and business to a select audience of business men and women. This event is reserved for our Presidents Forum members and guests. The Ambassador will also be expanding on suggestions made by guests before the event. The presentations and Q&A are French and English. On 4th July Alexandre Zana founder of Coding Days and Matthieu Tirelli Coding Day’s Lead Developer shared their expertise with Chamber members in a dynamic and interactive breakfast workshop. They explained in a fun and easy to understand way the basics of HTML, CSS and JAVA and the power of coding. With a few clicks they quickly transformed websites, making them look like they were made in the 90’s and changed Donald Trump’s twitter feed – modifying his tweets and profile picture. They also showed how to make passwords typed in to websites that are normally disguised by bullet points visible. It was a highly successful breakfast and many members stayed behind to network and discuss what they’d learned with the Coding Days team. Coding Days will be beginning a series of full-day Coding Workshops in September.
