Pupil size reflects trust

 
 
 

During eye contact, people tend to mirror the pupil size of the person they are conversing with. This social mechanism is related to the trust an individual has in the person they are talking to, according to research by psychologists at Leiden University. Publication in PNAS.

Archaeology student finds 7th century graves

 
 
 

Two graves dating from the 7th century have been discovered during an archaeological excavation in Leiden. One of the graves was found by a student of Archaeology during the first-year fieldwork project that took place at the same time as the excavation. The well-preserved graves are interesting because little is known about the inhabitants of the coastal region and their burial rituals in the Merovingian period.

New plant species mines metal

 
 
 

A plant that takes metal from the ground all by itself: a natural way to mine or to clean the soil. PhD student Roderick Bouman (Hortus Botanicus Leiden) described a new plant species from Sabah, Borneo, which can be used to extract nickel. He and the other authors present the new species: Phyllanthus rufuschaneyi
