No Images? Click here Dear friend of PLC The term has started with a flurry of activity. It has been such a joy to wander around classrooms and see our girls and little boys engaged in learning. My favourite activity was listening to the Year 2 students share their wishes for the year ahead. Ms Worthington and Ms Tutin had co-constructed with the girls a description of what their classroom should be like everyday. The end result can be seen below and made me reflect on how the criteria for an excellent learning environment remains consistent regardless of age. I sincerely hope all of our girls have a year where they feel a sense of wonder, are excited, thoughtful, positive and, ultimately, happy. To those families who have started with us this year, I hope the transition has been a smooth one. Starting at a new school is exciting but is also likely to come with increased anxiety until new friendships are formed and life settles into a routine. Please contact your daughter’s teacher in the Junior School or Year Co-ordinator in the Senior School should she be struggling to settle in, unable to find her buddy at break times or in need any other form of support. We are all here to assist your daughter in settling in to life at PLC as quickly as possible. 2017 LeaversIt is with great pleasure that I acknowledge the fantastic results of our 2017 Leavers in WACE ATAR and VET and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The combined effort of the girls resulted in PLC achieving a combined WACE and IB Diploma median ATAR of 90.20, which is outstanding. In particular, I would like to pay tribute to the girls who were recognised by the School Curriculum Standards Authority and IB for their high achieving results. WACEGeneral Exhibition

As the PLC community enters its 103rd year, perhaps it is good to remember our Scottish Celtic roots. A distinguishing feature of the Celtic faith was its belief that God is present in everything. Work and worship flowed into each other – no material/spiritual dualism so common today. God was always very close, present in every activity, in every word, in every breath. Without romanticising the harshness of the Celtic way of life, the challenge, in the midst of our fragmented, fractured, busy lives, is to find God in the midst of the common things of life. Below is a blessing from the late Celtic poet, scholar and priest, John O’Donohue. View a video of Beannacht here. Beannacht (‘Blessing’)On the day when And when your eyes When the canvas frays May the nourishment of the earth be yours, - Rev Gary van Heerden What a delight it has been to have the students back at school this week. Welcome Day, including the return-to-school afternoon, was well attended and all students were able to benefit from this opportunity to ease back into school. We also appreciated that so many parents made themselves available to participate in the day's activities. The last few days have seen quite a buzz around Junior School as new friendships are forged, old friendships are renewed and everyone is made to feel welcomed and part of the Junior School family. I would like to thank the staff for their efforts in making the Junior School such a vibrant and warm place in which our students learn. Many of the staff have been in for the last fortnight preparing the classrooms, planning and becoming familiar with the students and their learning needs. Class teachers will be contacting parents by phone over the next week to see how their child's transition to the new school year has been. On Tuesday morning, we welcomed two Whadjak Noongar gentlemen to open our School year with an indigenous smoking ceremony. This was such a special way for students, staff and some parents to gather for the first time. The ceremony involved the burning of native plants from the local area in a coolamon. Smoke is produced to cleanse the space and those in the ceremony. It was lovely to see that the girls maintained reverence during this time. There are many events coming up in the next few weeks and I look forward to joining you at some of these. Arriving Late Or Leaving Early New ProceduresAfter a trial across last year, we are adopting a new system for ‘signing’ in and out at school, doing away with paper. When arriving late to school, girls need to ‘tag in’ at reception, using their student card. The same applies when leaving school; girls use their cards to ‘tag out’, however, in addition we ask that the person collecting your daughter physically comes to reception as well. If someone other than a parent is collecting your daughter, please inform us by phone or email. Girls who don’t have their cards with them, are able to manually ‘tag out’ using the iPads.
