SLDL October News

The SLDL office hopes to engage students, faculty, and staff in ways
that promote and develop an inclusive and diverse environment.
We oversee student clubs and the Graduate Student Council, promote student engagement, host events and workshops related to diversity and leadership, advise international students, promote mentorship, and manage health insurance enrollment. CGU Student Clubs

Joining a student organization means joining a community, and having peers who oftentimes become your support group. Through these organizations you also have the opportunity to strengthen and develop your leadership skills by planning, developing, and implementing events on campus or by collaborating with other organizations or campus constituents. Here are a few of our current clubs:

SLDL Summer Walking Challenge Winners! 

We realized we did not announce the winners of the walking challenge in the September newsletter! Thank you to all the participants of SLDL's first Walking Challenge. On average, each person walked around 9,500 steps each day! 

Congratulations to the winning team (Kriti, Karthik, Sneha, Teresa and Tareq) for walking a total of 1,808,029 steps!

COVID-19 Research & Technology Resources

We're entering the fifth week of the semester. Here's a reminder of research and technology tools available to CGU students. Most know about their zoom account, but have you looked into Office 365? You can download Office 365 to at least three personal devices. To learn more, please review the pages on Research Continuity (IRB requirements, SPSS, Qualtrics, etc) and Learning Continuity (collaboration and conferencing tools such as Office 365).

CGU students have access to free, no-cost telehealth through 7C Health, a 24/7, free medical and mental health support. This service is available no matter where you are in the world, anytime, anywhere.

Mental Health Support for International Students Workshop 

Thursday, October 1st | 9 AM – 10 AM

Could you benefit from learning strategies and techniques to help support your mental health this semester? Whether you are living in the U.S. or another country, I-Place and MCAPS are here for our international student community. This interactive workshop will provide tips on caring for your mental health, managing your stress and anxiety, and how MCAPS can help you access resources no matter where you are located in the world.

7C Queer Story Circle

Tuesday, October 6 | 6PM - 8PM

The Queer Resource Center celebrates LGBTQIA+ History Month in October. We are partnering up with Dr. Gio Ortega to bring the practice of community story circles to our 7C family. Join us as we share our queer narratives in the spirit of exploring our interconnectedness in times of personal duress and societal discrimination.

FYE Coffee Hour Conversation

Wednesday, October 7 | 11 AM - 12 PM 

This monthly coffee hour is designed specifically for first year International students.

Dr. Wallace Chipidza, Assistant Professor of Information Systems & Technology will guide a conversation on the social movement occurring in the U.S. in response to police brutality and white supremacy, and what international students may see or encounter in the U.S.

Indigenous Peoples Day

Here in California, we have more people of Native American and Alaska Native ancestry than any other state in the country! With such a rich heritage surrounding us, the SLDL and Student Engagement teams want to celebrate the amazing accomplishments local Elders, artists and activists have made to improve our lives and communities. Join us for trivia, games and prizes to celebrate \'Indigenous Peoples' Day,' and honor the contributions and heritage of Indigenous People.

Qualifying Exams Preparation Weekend 

Friday, October 16 - Sunday, October 18 | 8:15 AM - 4:30 PM 

The Center for Writing & Rhetoric is happy to offer an event just for students at the qualifying exam stage. Designed for students doing timed exams, written assignments, dissertation chapter drafts, and portfolios, this event will provide the options of either dedicated work time with peers or a combination of work time and facilitated sessions on exam preparation topics.

CPT Workshop for F1 Students

Monday, October 19 | 12 PM - 1 PM 

The SLDL Office will host a Curricular Practical Training (CPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students interested in off-campus work authorization in their fields of study. During the session, we will cover information on what CPT is, and the application process including eligibility rules, timeline and required documents for submission.

GSC Town Hall

Save the date! Each year, the Graduate Student Council hosts a Town Hall Meeting inviting the student body to ask questions to the CGU's executive team. This is a great opportunity to hear from the executive team about pressing issues. Event information is forthcoming.

SLDL will host an Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students, especially those who are planning to apply for pre/post completion OPT during the current or upcoming semester. Negotiating Cross-Cultural Boundaries 

Friday, October 23 | 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM 

Hosted by the EmPower Center, this workshop is for all CGU international students. 

Meet Rima Shah, Director of the EmPower Center! With first-hand knowledge of coming to the U.S. as an international student, Rima will share her wealth of knowledge in navigating cross-cultural conversations. Rima will also provide tips on assertive communication.

EmPOWER Center Services 

The EmPOWER Center offers the following services: 

  1. Phone/Dixy.me sessions with Project Sister counselors. To schedule, please call (909) 607-0690. Ongoing sessions are available to students currently receiving EmPower counseling services OR to students living within CA. Students living outside of CA receive intial emotional support and referrals in their local communities (in keeping with CA mental health licensing laws).
  2. Phone/Zoom sessions with the EmPOWER director, Rima Shah (she's a confidential advocate). To schedule, please call (909) 607-2689 or email rshahempower@claremont.edu (available to students no matter where they are located in the world). 
  3. EmPOWER's 7C-wide educational programs will be offered via Zoom, videos, and more.
