Name Change & Portfolio Shift

Environment, Health & Safety has a new identity! We're now Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and part of the Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment portfolio. Along with these changes comes a new look for the Safety Bulletin as we align with the HRHSE brand and move to a new digital newsletter tool.

While our name has changed, our overall objectives remain; we continue to offer services and resources to advance safe, healthy, and environmentally-responsible research and learning at the U of A.

Thanks for your patience as we make the shift!

Walk-In Freezer Near Miss

An individual retrieving samples from a walk-in freezer found himself trapped inside after the door closed and locked behind him. He did not have a cell phone and was not dressed for cold temperatures.

While he managed to summon help by pounding on the door, a similar incident after hours could have ended disastrously.

Anyone who may be entering a walk-in cooler or freezer should implement control measures to address cold temperatures, poor ventilation, and other hazards associated with the activity.

Review this hazard assessment to learn more.

WFH Annual Inspection

It's time to inspect your work from home setup. Consider the following:

  • Fire safety: Test your smoke detectors and follow these tips to check your extinguisher.
  • Make sure you're checking in with team members and that they can reach you as needed. Exchange contact information (including emergency contact details) and set up a regular call or meeting to keep in touch.
  • Overall housekeeping: Secure loose cables to eliminate tripping hazards and avoid overloading electrical outlets.
  • Ergonomics: Try our self-assessment tool to improve your workstation setup and reduce posture-related injuries.

April 28 is the Day of Mourning

The National Day of Mourning commemorates workers who have been killed, injured, or made ill as a result of workplace hazards and exposures. In addition to serving as an opportunity for remembrance, the day is also intended to renew our commitment to occupational health and safety, and particularly to strategies for injury and illness prevention.

In the last year, over 200 U of A staff and students reported an injury or illness related to work. With the information provided, Health, Safety and Environment has been able to identify trends and information gaps, develop new resources, and work with individuals and groups on campus to improve working conditions.

Safety is a shared responsibility. It is crucial that anyone who experiences injury or illness related to work or learning reports it so that we can prevent similar incidents in the future.

Learn more about incident reporting at the U of A and share the online reporting tool with your staff and students.

President's Safety Commitment

President Flanagan reflects on what it means to be a safety leader and outlines a few ways to get started. Watch the video and stay tuned for the new President's Safety Commitment poster, which will be distributed across the university over the course of 2021.

Working with Contractors?
