APRIL CONSALO - Actor (Cannibal Mukbang)

April Consalo is an actor, screenwriter, playwright, and director based in NYC. She is best known for playing Ash in the horror-romance feature film Cannibal Mukbang, out now on Apple TV. She has also starred in the films ‘77, The Hatchling, and Wake Up Call. She can currently be seen in the play Good to You, of which she is both playwright and star, produced by Adult Film theatre company.

JRM: How did you first come aboard Cannibal Mukbang? What was your initial reaction when you read the script for the first time?

April: I just sent in a tape! The initial audition scene was the blanket fort scene, and then for callbacks it was the big “I don’t kill just anybody” monologue. A big difference! It made me super curious about the full script. After callbacks, Aimee sent me the whole thing and I read it in one sitting at a cafe. People probably thought I was crazy because I was reacting really strongly to it, laughing, crying… it affected me deeply and we had a long talk about it. At the end of that call she offered me the part!

JRM: Did you dive into any research on mukbang culture or classic horror tropes to prepare for your role?

April: I watched some mukbangs since I was unfamiliar with them, but I didn’t dive too deep into it. I actually don’t love watching people eat, haha! I did watch some classics. Everyone mentions Jennifer’s Body in reference to this movie, and I definitely studied both Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried as inspirations for Ash. I also watched a lot of classic rom coms, because I thought nailing that aspect of the genre was just as important.

JRM: How was your collaboration with the director (Aimee Kuge) throughout the shoot? Were there any particular notes or moments of direction that really helped shape your performance?

April: Aimee is brilliant. She leads her cast and crew with such a collaborative and supportive mindset. I like really practical notes, and Aimee is great at giving them. A lot of our dynamic is calibration - more of this, less of this, this is the real meat of it, this is where the light is, where the love is, etc.

JRM: What is it about horror that draws you in? Has it always been a genre you’ve wanted to explore as an actress?

April: I think the extremity is fun! As an actor you get to really explore parts of yourself and the world that are darker and more intense. It’s physically demanding in a way that feels athletic - the crying and running and stunts and all the fake blood. You feel really accomplished after all that effort turns into something so cool!

JRM: Without giving too much away, what do you hope audiences take from Cannibal Mukbang—besides maybe a warped craving for noodles?

April: Just, I guess, how patriarchy creates these traps of violence that everyone gets sucked into, in some way. And it’s okay to be really fucking angry about it. You should be, actually.

JRM: Can you give us a sneak peek into what’s next for you? Any new roles or projects you're excited about?

April: I’m in a play right now that’s about to start it’s run in New York! Theatre is really exciting to me at the moment. I have a horror short, ‘77, that’s on the festival circuit. My short film that I directed is getting ready to come out, and I’m writing a lot! Some other fun things are coming up soon, but I can’t talk about them yet!

JRM: And finally, what’s your all-time favorite horror movie?

April: The Shining, Titane, Love Lies Bleeding.
