WHĀNAU | talentMoses Wong Tung Te Ākitai Waiohua, Waikato Tainui Moses Wong Tung hopes to make his mark on the netball court at the New Zealand Men’s National Championship next month. Moses started playing netball as a young boy at Viscount Primary in a school team before being recruited by the Manukau Rovers at just 11 years old. He said he was introduced to netball by his many netball playing girl friends at school, who recognised him as a good and inspirational shooter with consistent skills
While representing Tamaki Makaurau at the 2017 men’s national competition is one of Moses’ netball highlights, being named ‘Player of the Year’ in the more humble club netball social competition this year remains top of his list. His daughter Promise, along with his mum, dad and sister Bella are some of his biggest influences. He says they are always there to support him, and in turn he tries to the best of his ability to return their support. “I want to be a good influence on my daughter Promise and use my experience and knowledge to encourage her to become a Silver Fern like Aunty Maia Wilson. I like to take her shopping and don’t mind working overtime so I can support my whanau and their needs.” Moses said he is “strongly Waiohua proud from Puukaki Marae”. He is also proud to be connected with the LGBTQI communities, and has a strong and diverse cultural background of ethnicities, including Maori, Niuean, Samoan and Chinese.
