Gary van Heerden ICAS English 2017Aside from the sheer joy of exercising the imagination, research shows that reading for pleasure improves literacy, social skills, health and learning outcomes. It gives people access to culture and heritage and empowers them to become active citizens, who can contribute to economic and social development. As an IB school, this is what we strive for and so it is interesting to notice the link between reading and achievement in the recent ICAS English assessments undertaken by several girls in the Junior School. A number of girls from Years 4 to 6 achieved very good results when they participated in the ICAS English Assessments last term, and all enjoy the sport of reading: Books are a mirror, reflecting our girl’s lives, and provide a window into someone else’s. Congratulations to all the girls who participated and in particular Emma Ryan (Year 4), Livya Siford (Year 4), Annabella Davies (Year 5), Charlotte Gishubl (Year 5), Katherine Lovegrove (Year 5), Eirwyn Siford (Year 5) and Katie Marris (Year 6) who all achieved Distinctions, placing them in the top 11% nationally. Year 4 International MarketThe Mandarin and French classrooms were buzzing this week and smelling wonderful as we held our Year 4 International Markets. During Term 3, Year 4 Language B students made connections with their Unit of Inquiry: Economic activity relies on systems of production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. The girls had a fabulous time at their markets, demonstrating their learning related to currency, exchange rates, food and drinks. - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School Junior School Colour Run PostponedPlease note the Junior School Colour Run that was scheduled to be held today, Thursday 21 September, has been postponed due to poor weather. The event will be rescheduled to a date in Term 4 (yet to be confirmed). Uniform Shop ReminderFrom the commencement of Term 4, we transition to summer uniform. Don’t leave it until the last minute to check sock supplies and that panama hats are looking crisp. Every term at PLC is busy but certainly also fulfilling. I know that the fuel tanks are somewhat depleted at present and I hope all girls, including our Year 12s can find some time to relax and reset during the next few weeks, ready for Term 4. Next term, our Year 10s commence Year 11 work and Year 11s commence Year 12 studies. All other year groups continue with their regular curriculum. To avoid any confusion about who to contact about your daughters, the good news is that there are no changes at this point in time to Year or Learning Co-ordinators! Year 10s are still treated as Year 10, Year 9s as Year 9s and so on. The only difference is that Years 10 and 11 commence next year’s work. Changes of Year and Learning Co-ordinators, where appropriate, take place on the calendar year – that is, at the beginning of 2018. For your convenience, I have listed the Term 4 co-ordinators below: Year 7

Year 9
