Leadership Forum Wrap Up

The 2019 Engagement Australia signature Leadership Forum themed From Agency to Action! saw 50 senior university leaders in engagement come together in Canberra earlier this month to hear from some of the world’s leading experts in university engagement on how they are shaping and integrating the very best of what has been learned locally and globally with current practice. 

The overarching theme for the global Leadership Forum this year was to advance the Australian sector’s Engagement agenda – a step from agency to action in a year that will see new rankings and evaluation systems for university engagement emerge.

The reality is that universities compete with one another for places in a hierarchy of league tables and many believe that there is an increasing need for alternative global rankings around meaningful engagement. Melbourne University has partnered with the University of Chicago and King’s College London to explore possible incentives for institutional engagement and consider the intricacies of making engagement truly global and measuring it.

This article describes the evolution and development of the National Inventory of Institutional Infrastructure on Community Engagement (NIIICE) used in the United States as a strategic planning tool to advance community engagement in higher education. The authors also describe how the tool has been utilized during two-day institutes to promote dialogue and networking for community engagement professionals.

The Parramatta Community Justice Clinic Partnership Program

The Parramatta Community Justice Clinic (PCJC) is a partnership program between Western Sydney University and Western Sydney Community Legal Centre Limited. The PCJC provides free legal advice, casework and court or tribunal representation to residents in Western Sydney who cannot afford a solicitor. The PCJC also facilitates a clinical placement for law students of Western Sydney University.

Victoria University Polytechnic has worked closely with the University’s Footscray University Town Initiative to develop a new 15-week course to assist people from African Australian backgrounds to be recruited into the Victorian Police. The innovative course, which commenced in November, is a core component of the Victoria Police Diversity Recruitment Program.
