CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Read our construction update to see what has been achieved and what is coming up on the Karangahape Road Enhancements project.

Pitt Street to Queen Street

Upcoming works - what to expect:

The traffic management plan for the section between Queen Street and Pitt Street has been approved and works will commence Wednesday 29 July 2020.  The bus stops in this section will be removed but service will be maintained along Karangahape Road.  There will be signage to help direct passengers to alternative bus stops.

For more information on the bus stop closures and which bus services are affected visit AT’s website here

On Wednesday pedestrian fencing and traffic management will be set up, and the construction team will commence demolition, starting with sawcutting along the carriageway and footpath

Symonds Street to Queen Street

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Finalise cycleway asphalt at Queen Street corner
  • Lowering existing service covers

Note the bus stop between Symonds and Liverpool Street will reopen on Wednesday 29 July 2020

Upcoming night works - what to expect:

On Monday 27 July 2020 from 19:00 - 04:00:

The existing traffic light at the corner of Queen Street, near Amnesty International will be moved to the traffic island.

A change in lane layout will be required while this work is taking place, however vehicle and footpath access will be maintained around the work. Please note there will be intermittent medium to low volume noise, i.e. trucks moving but we will endeavour to have noisy works completed by 10:30pm.

On Tuesday 28 July 2020 from 19:00 - 04:00:

Interim changes to line marking across Karangahape Road between Queen Street and Upper Queen Street will be undertaken on Tuesday night.  This is in preparation for the new site setup between Queen Street and Pitt Street, planned for Wednesday 29 July 2020..

These night works are taking place in the evening due to high pedestrian and vehicle numbers during the day.

Upper Queen Street to Mercury Lane

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue low level planting at the rain garden closest to Upper Queen Street
  • Prepare for planting of the Nikau palms at the mid block pedestrian crossing
  • Prepare for soft opening of the cycleway between Cross Street and Mercury Lane

Mercury Lane to West Terrace

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue construction of the raingarden and tree pit near West Terrace
  • Continue laying cycleway and kerbline
  • Continue with drainage and utilities installations
  • Commence cycleway asphalt between East Street and Mercury Lane

West Terrace temporary road closure for speed table construction:

Work to construct the speed table across West Terrace is under action.  Due to the narrow nature of West Terrace a temporary road closure is being maintained.

There is no vehicle access to West Terrace via Karangahape Road for the duration of this work which is expected to continue up to mid August 2020.  Vehicle access is being provided for residents only via Galatos Street.

Hereford Street to Howe Street

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Commence low level planting in rain gardens on both sides of Howe Street
  • Prepare kerb and channel on the eastern side of Howe Street, near Thirsty Dog
  • Continue drinking water fountain and planter construction

CYCLEWAY - SOFT OPENING:

During the works, sections of the newly constructed cycleway have remained closed for safety reasons as they did not link up along the street. However, as works are progressing, we can facilitate a soft opening of the cycleway now instead of opening it fully at the end of the project.  In conjunction with AT and Bike Auckland we have and will continue to open sections of the cycleway - there will be temporary signage and road markings to help guide cyclists on along the cycleway.  Please follow these signs and dismount when required

While this "soft opening" will allow cyclists to utilise sections of the cycleway that do not have active construction in them, it is important to note that construction work will take place later at some of these ‘open’ cycleway sections to finalise construction.

In these instances, we will have the relevant traffic management in place to indicate these work locations, but we will endeavour to maintain cycleway access.

Temporary road markings are completed on the eve of the opening.

The following are planned sections to be opened - dates will be confirmed in the upcoming newsletters:

  • Ponsonby Road to Hereford Street:  Complete
  • Hereford Street to Howe Street (Dismount before Howe Street): Complete
  • Overbridge North Side: Complete
  • Symonds Street to Upper Queen Street:  Tentative date 5 August sign off pending
  • Upper Queen Street to Mercury Lane (Dismount before Mercury Lane): Tentative date 5 August sign off pending
  • Overbridge South Side: TBC
  • Symonds Street to Queen Street:  TBC
