Throwback ThursdayNotorious Criminal's Dash for LibertyOn 25 March 1918, Walter Sutherland, a ‘clever and dangerous’ criminal from Melbourne escaped through the window of a train at Strathfield Railway Station. Just a few months into a ten year sentence for break, enter and stealing, he was returning to Bathurst Gaol with his warder. Injured, handcuffed and in prison garb, he was sighted at Flemington, Homebush and Lidcombe during the next few days. By April a reward of £100 was offered for information leading to his re-arrest. Despite this he managed to remain at large until August when he was found asleep in a house in Woolloomooloo. Walter Sutherland, also known as Walter Mitchell and Andrew Cooper.
