CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Read our construction update to see what has been achieved and what is coming up on the Karangahape Road Enhancements project.

Symonds Street to Upper Queen Street

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • In a small section by the corner of Upper Queen Street, a team will be building a traffic island for the new traffic lights.

Upper Queen Street to Mercury Lane

An improvement to the temporary traffic management setup has been implemented, decreasing our work zone and making available an additional lane at the intersection.

Work has progressed well over the last week with large sections of roadside kerblines installed and traffic island base poured.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Continue to pave the traffic island separating the cycleway from vehicles from the mid block pedestrian crossing towards Mercury Lane
  • Continue laying pavers on the footpath at the mid-block pedestrian crossing. Access to businesses will be maintained while this work continues
  • Works on the Upper Queen Street corner will be starting on Tuesday to remove the existing slip lane, connect the cycleway and reconstruct the new wider footpath. Part of this work includes the careful removal of the Nikau palms, ready for replanting back into the project at a later stage.

Upcoming night works - what to expect:

  • On Monday 2 March 2020, the concrete footpath base will be poured alongside the Coffix and Zea's Hair Salon, in preparation for paving
  • On Tuesday 3 March 2020 across the mid-block pedestrian crossing, ducting will be installed below ground and new kerb and channel will be put in place. This work will be carried out over 3 nights
  • These night works are taking place in the evening when pedestrian volumes are lower. Footpath access and at the mid-block pedestrian crossing will be maintained around the work

Ponsonby Road to Hereford Street

Works in this location are progressing well with the new concrete footpath on the corner by Joy Bong Thai Restaurant and the second half of the speedtable across the intersection completed. Rubbish bins, the first of the street furniture have also been installed. To reopen this intersection, Hereford Street needs to be re-milled to bring the road to the correct level.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Works to mill the existing surface of Hereford Street and relay new asphalt is scheduled for Friday 6 March 2020. This work is planned for the day shift, utilising the single lane closure, to avoid disruptive night works in this location
  • The loading zone in Hereford street will become available after this line marking has been completed

Upcoming night works - what to expect:

  • On Friday, 6 March 2020, new road line marking on Hereford Street will take place. This work is scheduled for the evening when there traffic volumes are lower. Please note there will be low volume noise, i.e. vehicle engine and spray paint compressor noise

Hereford Street to Howe Street

Over the last week, the Howe Street corner made headway with the radius kerb installed and the footpath down Howe Street concreted and asphalted.

Upcoming works - what to expect:

  • Preparation works for the traffic control box to be moved

    Howe Street to Overbridge

Upcoming works - what to expect:

    • Today, Peter Lange's Chaise Lange was reinstalled
    • On Tuesday, work will start on the other side of Howe Street, by The Thirsty Dog

      Overbridge

Upcoming works - what to expect:

      • Today, one of the three Janet Lilo's Don’t Dream it’s Over was reinstalled on the overbridge
      • Continue installing glass in the frame of the second bus stop shelter

      Design: Pāua Bus Shelter

      • The colour of the glass panels has been informed by the historic/cultural meaning behind pāua shells
      • Pāua reference from the eyes of traditional carving
      • In this context the shelters are the project ‘eyes’ and from the bridge outlook to both Maungawhau and Waitematā.

      STAGING & LOADING ZONES

Below is a map of the Karangahape Road precinct showing the construction stages, temporary bus stop relocations and loading zones.

On Monday 9 March 2020, the team will move into the section from Symonds Street to Queen Street to start work there. For most of this stage, construction is in the carriageway and the outer edge of the footpath, however there will be footpath reconstruction on the intersections at Liverpool Street and Queen Street.  The bus stop at this location will also be removed but service will be maintained along Karangahape Road.

Auckland Transport’s parking enforcement is working to ensure parking is being correctly used throughout the Karangahape Road precinct.  If you have a request for parking enforcement, please call Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.
