Two members of each team stayed with the slideshow, poster and prototypes showcasing their product, whilst other team members circulated in the 10,000+ strong crowd, convincing people to come over to hear their pitch and vote. The professionalism displayed by all students was impressive. At the end of the day, the votes were in and the team named 'Plastic Sucks' won the most votes with their simple idea of a reusable, recyclable straw worn as a bracelet, connected with a 3D printed filter. Their win secures $5000 for School 21 to spend on new technology! As well as this, the students got to meet David Walliams who was the key note speaker at the event. We are so proud of everyone who worked so hard on their products over the last term for this event. Bikeability Update This year's Bikeability course wrapped up last week. A group of 25 Year 6 and 5 students spent sessions over the week developing their skill and confidence as cyclists. The feedback from the instructors was absolutely glowing - they were very keen to come back to School 21 again! Thank you to all the students who participated, the parents and carers who helped get bikes to and from school and to Ms Chartres for organising the event. We are booked in to the scheme again in the Autumn term next year! Get your helmets ready! Speaking Up for Oracy at Parliament On the Monday before half term a group of Year 5 and 6 representatives were invited to parliament to speak to MPs about the importance of Oracy at school and in their lives. Senenti, Isabella, IK, Aaishah, Adil and Sameeksha did a brilliant job representing School 21, stepping up to interview politicians and discuss talking points about how speaking and listening in class and beyond has helped them. Emma Hardy, the MP and former teacher who has driven the initiative was there to speak to the students about their experiences. They had a great time collecting autographs as well! Summer Fair Update Coming up on Friday 5th July is our Annual Summer Fair, organised collaboratively with Primary. We would really love to have as many parents involved as possible in preparing, running and tidying up after the event. If you would like to be involved (even if it is just to donate an hour or two of your time!), please email Ms Kyrk (akyrk@school21.org.uk). We will need help throughout the event which will run from 3:30pm to 6:00pm, and also in the weeks leading up to the event. Some of our wonderful parental community have already kicked off booking rides and stalls, so please get in touch if you would like to join them! Some of the areas we would love some help with are: - Planning the event There is an opportunity as well to run your own stall during the event for a one off stall fee. Please get in touch with Ms Kyrk for further information. Please note that while all students are welcome to attend the Summer Fair, parents or carers must attend with them, even in Years 7 and 8. Korean Visitors Over the next two weeks Middle School will be hosting 12 guest teachers from Korea! The teachers are visiting School 21 to learn about the different aspects that make our school special such as Oracy, Project Based Learning and Coaching. They will be popping in to support and see lessons throughout the week so make sure you're stepping up to welcome them if you're a student and they come to your class! Postcard Avalanche! A HUGE backlog of postcards recognising students and staff have been uncovered and addressed over the half term! Some of these go waaaaay back to the Great Oracy Exhibition and the Bring a Parent to School day! Keep an eye on your postbox - one of these bad boys might be on its way there as you read... Recognition last week Our recognition boards were filled with names again last week. Congratulations and thank you to all who demonstrated working in the zone, choosing kind and stepping up - you make our Middle School community #middlestrong!
