Over the past few months many large scale public events have either been postponed or cancelled, including the Civic Awards ceremony which was due to be held in March. However, our well-deserving winners still managed to receive their awards - just in a more unusual fashion this year.
The Civic Awards are all about giving individual residents or local groups that live or work in Barnet recognition for their outstanding achievements and contribution to the borough. These hard-working residents look forward to the annual awards ceremony and reception at the Town Hall, not just to receive their award, but the opportunity to meet the Mayor of Barnet.
Angela Richardson, who organises the Civic Awards, said it had been quite a challenge trying to find the opportunity, where the winners and everyone involved could have a moment to receive their awards, safely and at a social distance.
Angela said: “Yes, it’s been a journey getting this done this year, but we are there! Initially the Civic Award nominees were very disappointed they would not be able to attend a presentation ceremony and reception at the Town Hall.
“However, we were determined that they should not miss out and once lockdown had partially lifted, we started to make preparations for a socially distanced presentation. As restrictions became more relaxed, we were able to finalise the arrangements.
“The recipients were absolutely delighted having the Mayor visit them just outside their homes. Some alerted their friends, family and neighbours so the experience could be shared from a distance too. The photos taken of their presentations show the complete joy in their faces and I have received calls and emails of thanks to express their delight.
“This was an event for the history books and we did the best we could under these very difficult circumstances.”
