Middle School
Online Learning Provision
Dear parents / carers, A huge thank you for all of your kind feedback and offers to help over the last week. It was a very trying time for everyone, however being in our school environment amongst our community was very lifting for all the staff still working on the ground as well as those supporting us from home. The middle school ended the week with some incredible whole-school songs. You can watch these below. Thank you to all the staff who made our final 'official' day one of laughter, fun, learning and togetherness.
Online learning in the middle school is different for Year 5/6 and Years 7/8 and for the different subjects. For details on what to expect subjects and year groups see the information below. Please note, we understand that this is a big change in the daily lifestyle of all of us - parents, students and our staff. Please remember there is not an expectation for parents to become replacement teachers. You aren't expected to stick to a strict timetable that mirrors the school day. The best thing we can suggest for families is to use this time to be together and do things - bake, play a board game, have a discussion or debate, create a piece of art, go for a walk, play a game in your yard. The provision below is to support the children through this
time and give them inspiration to get them thinking! A 'How To' Guide for using Google classrooms is available by clicking here.
A video 'How To' Guide for using Google classrooms is available by clicking here.
*Please note this guide was made for secondary - Middle School students will only be part of one class where all work will be posted, rather than different classrooms for different subjects.
Maths:
Every Monday, we will post a selection of differentiated worksheets as well as a quick video targeting common misconceptions all based around that week’s topic. Children are expected to complete the worksheets over the course of the week (1 per day). On Thursdays, we will set assessment tasks on Hegarty Maths and post answers for children to self-assess. Writing:
Spellings will be set on a Monday. Parents can test children on a Friday and send us scores if they wish.
We will be asking children to complete one piece of writing a week. The focus text type will be posted on a Monday along with supporting model texts/grammar exercises/planning sheets etc which children can then complete one of per day. Final written pieces can be submitted online to us for comments when completed. Reading:
Children should be reading for at least 30 minutes per day and answering quizzes on Accelerated Reader once books are complete.
On Mondays, we will also be posting a weeks’ worth of reading tasks around a pdf text for children to complete one per day. Coaching:
We will be offering a once daily, 30 minutes hangout at 9.30am to check-in with everyone and answer questions/say hi. We will also be regularly posting video clips with questions on big coaching topics that children can journal about. Project:
On Mondays, we will post a key question based on our current history topic (Ancient Islamic Civilisation) along with links to accessible videos/ websites/sources for children to explore the question and then produce a given outcome e.g. poster/slide show/board game.

Ms McLear (Nuture Group teacher) smclear@school21.org.uk
Maths:
In Year 6, each child’s individual maths teacher will be uploading differentiated work into their maths classroom. There will be one task set for each day and the children should complete this as independently as possible. Every Tuesday, at 10:00am, their individual maths teacher will be live on google hangout, for 1 hour, to go through any questions about the work set and mark any previous work (a link will be sent to individual classrooms 24 hours before). Some groups will also have tasks set on Hegarty Maths but this is based on individual teachers and classes.
Writing:
Writing tasks will be set every Monday by the children’s individual teacher which will allow for differentiation, so every child is able to access the task. The grammar set will depend on what is needed for the particular genre being studied. Teachers will be available for a one hour Google hangout every Monday and Wednesday at 10:00am. Children can complete their writing using a Google doc and can then share this with their teacher when the work is completed. Reading:
We will be using the text Carrie’s War to answer questions by delving deeply into the text through questioning and activities. The work will be uploaded once a week and will consist of reading two chapters and then completing the questions posed. Every Thursday at 10:00am, their individual teacher will be available on a Google hangout, to mark and discuss the text for 1 hour with their group. Coaching:
We will be having a live google hangout session, every Friday at 10:00 - 11:00am, to check in with how everyone is and spend some time discussing some big coaching topics (such as our School21 values). This will also be an opportunity to ‘introduce’ the project task for the following week and answer any immediate questions. Project:
On a Friday, during our coaching time, we will be introducing the task for the following week. This will continue to be linked with WW2 and each task should be completed within a week. Our project will also continue to be linked with our writing tasks to support the children’s depth of understanding.

Coaching
Starting this week, students will be asked to write weekly entries into a personal, online journal using a Google Form provided (this will be posted on Google Classroom). These journal entries will be read by the students’ coach who may ask follow up questions but will not ‘mark’ or ‘assess’ the entries. Starting from next week onwards, students will join a Google Hangouts class at 10.10 every Thursday morning. These classes will contain reduced class sizes and will involve group discussions in much the same way as a coaching session at school. More details on this to follow.
Please remember to monitor your child whenever they are online. There is opportunity for them to be video chatting with classmates through the Google Hangout links. It is important that you are aware of what activities your child is engaged with online. If you have any concerns and need support, please contact your child's teacher or coach and we can assist.
If you experience any technical issues whilst learning online, we have a dedicated help desk you can email at virtualclassroom@school21.org.uk.
If your child can't remember their password to access their Google Classroom, please email your class teacher in Year 5 and Year 6, Ms Jenkins in Year 7 (gjenkins@school21.org.uk) and Ms Bannis in Year 8 (lbannis@school21.org.uk) and they will be able to reset these for you.
