Questions and responses from a few finance faculty. Responses are in alphabetical order.

Dear Finance Vols,

I imagine some of you may be feeling overwhelmed with everything that is going on right now, especially with final exams approaching. I have found that taking a moment and making a list of things for which I am thankful and giving thanks for those things help me put things into perspective and experience peace in the midst of turmoil. Many of the finance faculty are praying for you and your families. Here are thoughts and tips from some of the finance faculty that we hope will help you stay positive, productive, and peaceful. You have so much to offer. Thank you for working with us during this major transition to online when many of us have responsibilities for others as well as ourselves. We want to encourage you all to finish strong!

Tracie Woidtke, Ph.D.

Finance Department Head & David E. Sharp/Home Federal Bank Professor
Neel Corporate Governance Center Research Fellow

Bahr: Closed my room and yelled expletives at my computer.

Cole: Lists! I make a “to-do” daily short-term and semester long-term goal list that is visible each day. I feel great every time I check something off.

Daves: I try and get some exercise outside every day. It’s beautiful here in Knoxville in the spring. Take advantage of it.

Eldemire-Poindexter: Reminding myself of the so-called Physics of Productivity (Newton’s first law of motion): objects in motion tend to stay in motion. To quote Dory from Finding Nemo, “Just keep swimming.”

Fauver: Cook and bake with my wife and hang out with our cat.

Harrell: Established a healthy diet and eating routine!!

Kelley: I’ve built several things... a few desks, a new workbench, garage organizers, even cornhole boards for my neighbor! I’ve found that doing this type of work both relieves stress and stimulates creativity.

Murphy: I get up every morning, make my bed, and put on lipstick! (And look at pictures of my granddaughters!)

Bahr: That my computer could not answer my expletives.

Cole: My faith, and that churches of all sizes were able to transfer their business models as well and provide masses and other resources and services online.

Daves: I’ve connected more regularly with my extended family via weekly Zoom “family reunions.”

Eldemire-Poindexter: My students! Participation in the Zoom meeting made teaching online less daunting. Also, the leadership and steady communication from the Department, College, and University.

Farley: Weekly video get-togethers with friends and family on apps like Houseparty, Zoom, and Whatsapp

Fauver: I’m able to get out and walk and have time to really think about things.

Harrell: All the wonderful people in this world.

Kelley: My tech-savvy kids. They’ve adjusted so well.

Murphy: That I have people who care about me—neighbors, family, friends.

Bahr: BURN MY COMPUTER!

Cole: Hugs from my family! I can’t wait to travel and see older relatives in other states.

Daves: Go see my grandchildren and hug them.

Eldemire-Poindexter: I am looking forward to taking our new baby to watch her big sister play softball!

Farley: Getting to spend more time with my wife and children.

Fauver: Visit family and friends.

Harrell: Ride my Can-Am “Batmobile” (three wheel motorcycle).

Kelley: Go to the movies.

Murphy: Go to my hairstylist.

Bahr: Stay calm, carry on, and try to laugh as much as possible! In short, practice goo Risk Management!

Cole: Don’t try to be overly ambitious, and be forgiving of yourself. While it is great to set goals and achieve the best for yourself, it’s also okay to have a bad day. Tomorrow is another day!

Daves: Structure will help you focus on your studies. Find a place and time to focus on your school work, and be intentional about turning off social media during that time. Don’t watch the news too much.

Eldemire-Poindexter: Try to see the forest through the woods; keep doing your best to work through the short-term challenges of today so you can thrive in the next season of life.

Farley: Keep your resume up to date, and cast a wider net for internship and job opportunities, custom tailor your resume for each type of opportunity.

Fauver: Remain positive as this situation, like most, is only temporary.

Harrell: Be mindful and thankful for the people in your life as you will find they are what really matter.

Kelley: Since the hours and days all run together, develop a routine that separates things like work and play. Exercise every day. Stay connected in your most meaningful relationships even though you must do it remotely.

Murphy: Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the good things.
