Council’s next hearing date in the Court of Land and Environment is Tuesday 2 May. Strathfield Council continues to review its legal options in light of the new developments regarding amalgamation. The Community Safety Expo is this Saturday and the following Monday! Get all the tips on keeping your sensitive information, home and family safe with presentations on cyber hacking and security, telecommunications and a variety of stall holders. Saturday 29 April 9am - 3pm Security in and around Strathfield Town Centre has been upgraded with the installation of CCTV cameras. Due to the nature of transport interchanges and access to escape, the Town Centre has been a popular spot for crimes, such as on person theft and assault. The new cameras will deter offenders as well as increase our potential to secure convictions when offences do occur. During 2016 Strathfield residents generated 8,685 tonnes of domestic waste, which was delivered to Veolia’s Woodlawn Bioreactor for energy recovery. This amount of waste has the potential to generate 728,000m3 of methane gas, the equivalent of 7,280 tonnes of CO2. The bioreactor captures these emissions preventing them from entering our atmosphere. The energy potential of this material will contribute 1,900 megawatt hours of renewable energy which can power 300 homes for 1 year. Nomination period extended to Monday 8 May! The Strathfield Youth Achievement Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of young people who go to school, live, work or train in the Strathfield Local Government Area. Running for almost 10 years, the Awards are organised by Strathfield Council and the Rotary Club of Strathfield. Do you know an exceptional young person who deserves their achievements to be recognised? Nominate them by filling out the application form by Monday 12pm, 8 May 2017. Weed management legislation is changing. The NSW Biosecurity Act 2015 (the Biosecurity Act), will come into effect 1 July 2017. It will repeal the NSW Noxious Weeds Act 1993. Priority weeds will no longer be defined as “noxious” and the noxious class listings will no longer apply. For more information on how you can protect our environment from noxious weeds, see the website. War Graves at Rookwood CemeteryRookwood is the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere and is part of the war story in the Strathfield area. The cemetery has a war graves section which features the graves of many young soldiers who died in training, returned service men in family graves, and symbolic monuments by families for soldiers killed overseas, missing in action or never found. Rookwood Cemetery is the only memorial these families may have had, not being able to go to Europe. There is also a Jewish War grave section and memorial to the Merchant Navy causalities. Over 73,000 plaques are located within the cemetery commemorating our war dead. Words by Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust.
