The Cooks River Fun Run is back for 2017! Now in its 8th year, this family friendly race will be held on Sunday 25 June, starting at Freshwater Park, and includes several events and categories ensuring there is something for everyone. So come join us for an active day out and about in the beautiful green spaces of the Cooks River. Once again, the event is supporting Bowel Cancer Australia, with $5 from each entry donated to assist with research and awareness for this important cause. Register before Friday 9 June for early bird discounts! Council is proactively undertaking a safety audit of all awnings over public lands. The current priority is assessing awnings over outdoor dining areas to ensure they are safe for the public. If you have any information you would like to share with the team, or have questions regarding your own awning, contact Council on 9748 9999. Strathfield Council is putting the call out for residents who want to make a difference by volunteering in their local community! There are many exciting opportunities including bush regeneration, working with children and seniors programs, teaching English as a second language, and more. Volunteering is a great way to gain experience, stay active and make friends. Call Council for more information on 9748 9999 or email council@strathfield.nsw.gov.au Have you seen this buggy around the footpaths of Strathfield? Council is undertaking an asset review of all the footpaths in the LGA to proactively identify those in need of repair. The buggy is set up with cameras to capture and record the footpaths, allowing staff to locate and geo code defects which then get sent to the works team for repair. Nicholas is the driver and is making his way through 200km of footpath – no easy feat! Strathfield Council has just taken receipt of 2 new state of the art garbage trucks! The trucks are rear-loading compactors and designed in conjunction with Council staff to further improve and ensure the safety of staff. The new trucks will assist the waste management team with the demands of a growing population. There are limited spaces remaining for tonight’s Twilight Tour of Vivid Sydney! Start the evening at The Rocks, wander with the group or strike out on your own for a light meal. At 6.30pm we will re-group to take up vantage points around Circular Quay to watch the incredible light shows of the Opera House and Harbour foreshore. When: Thursday 1 June, from 4pm Council held an e-waste collection day on Saturday 27 May and residents came out in force to divert these recyclable materials from landfill! See Council’s website for more information on recycling. Strathfield Council – 132nd AnniversaryOn Friday 2 June Council will mark the 132nd Anniversary of its incorporation in 1885. In 1884, residents of the Strathfield, Strathfield South and Homebush areas petitioned the State Government demanding the right to manage and control their own local area and approval was granted in 1885. The new Council included the areas of Redmyre (now Strathfield), Homebush and Druitt Town (parts of Strathfield and Strathfield South) and was named ‘Strathfield’ after a local home built by former Mayor of Sydney, Walter Renny c.1868.
