September Update

Welcome to the September edition of OTYP's Enews.

It's been a busy time for our little company, over the past few months we have covered a lot of ground, racked up a lot of km's on the company Subaru, and worked with young people from Swan Hill, to Albury, Deniliquin to Hay and a few places in between.

Here's a little update on all our projects. We hope you enjoy.

Gifts of Translation Festival in Swan Hill

It's a wrap....

We can take a deep breath now, and give ourselves a pat on the back as our twelve month-long project in Swan Hill comes to an end. Over 300 people joined us on the 6th September at the Swan Hill Town Hall to help us celebrate the diverse African Cultures that live in Swan Hill. There was food aplenty, an art exhibition, dance workshops, and of course, a play written and presented by young people. The night concluded with the Rhythm of Life African Drummers performance.

It was a beautiful demonstration of a community coming together to bridge the divide between cultures, and increase understanding of the stories, art, craft and food that celebrating cultural diversity can bring.

Thanks to all involved for being a part of this beautiful journey for Outback Theatre, and the African cultures of Swan Hill.

Gifts of Translation is supported by the Department of Social Services, the Australia Council and the Besen Foundation

EMERGE Riverina Playwright Commission awarded to Julian Larnach

You may have already heard the news, earlier this year we awarded Julian Larnach, winner of the EMERGE: Riverina Playwright Commission.

Julian’s Play, M.I.A (working title), is being developed through a comprehensive mentoring process with Jessica Bellamy, and is set to premiere at Griffith Regional Theatre in June 2015, tour to Deniliquin and finish with a season at Australian Theatre for Young People in Sydney.

The process so far has been really exciting. Julian and Jessica spent a week at HotHouse Theatre's 'House in the Country' to develop the work. they were lucky enough to work with the HotHouse Studio Ensemble to unpack the themes of Julian's proposed work over two sessions.

They were fantasic to work with and now we have Draft 1 in our hot little hands. We have also planned a week in Griffith in November to work with some of our local young writers before the development of Draft 2.

Stay tuned, this work will be directed by Paige Rattray in 2015 and through this process of community consultation, workshops and residencies, we hope to present to you an aunthentic, heart warming regional story that our communites can be proud of.

The development of Julian's work is proudly supported by the Ian Potter Foundation, Copyright Agency Limited Cultural Fund, The Australia Council and Arts NSW.
