Family Medicine Team Develops Tool to Improve Quality of Medical Procedures Cloud-based data collection tool provides real-time feedback to inform improvements for physicians Successful medical innovations are the culmination of people with passion, hard work and a little bit of good luck. For Dr. Michael Kolber and Ms. Nicole Olivier, all of these things combined extensive research experience and a
desire to improve health care led to the creation of Electronic Medical Procedure Reporting System (EMPRSS). On November 28, 2018 Kolber and Olivier were recognized with a TEC Edmonton Spin-off Achievement Award, joining several other individuals from the University of Alberta whose research has culminated in the successful creation of a company with the potential to improve quality of life for Albertans.

Research Scholarship Stream Beginning with the 2019-2020 resident academic year, the department will be offering a Research Scholarship Stream (RSS) to incoming family medicine residents. RSS will provide residents the opportunity to develop research and scholarship skills in family medicine and will be integrated into the family medicine curriculum over the two years of the residency program. In addition, dedicated research time will be available in the curriculum in the form of research electives in years 1 and 2 of the program. The objectives of the RRS are for residents to: develop an effective research question; undertake a literature review; apply an appropriate research method to address the research question; collect
and manage data in an ethically sound manner; and disseminate research findings through oral and written presentations.
Once matched to the U of A family medicine program, residents will identify their interest in the RSS. and will be assigned a RSS supervisor who is a full-time research faculty member in the department. The supervisor will guide the resident throughout the research process to meet the learning objectives. Please direct incoming residents who are interested in the research scholarship stream to Dr. Donna Manca (dpmanca@ualberta.ca)
SPIDER-NET Study NAPCReN is excited to be part of a recently funded Quality Improvement study entitled SPIDER (Structured Process Informed by Data, Evidence and Research). The study aims to assess whether this collaborative process will help family practices improve care for patients aged 65 and older who are prescribed 10 or more different prescriptions by reducing potentially inappropriate prescriptions. Secondary objectives include measuring the impact of SPIDER on patient health related quality of life, healthcare costs and on provider
satisfaction. For more information, please contact Allison at aboileau@ualberta.ca
