Gold Coast Weekly | Issue #26 | Olympics

Help us celebrate the Olympic Games next week at our family-friendly Olympics Live in Broadbeach.

Issue #26: Want a fun evening out the whole family can enjoy? In this week's edition, we're bringing you details on our Olympic live site, how you can get involved in caring for our beaches and what steps you can take to prepare your household in the case of a fire.

Olympic Live Site

Take your marks Gold Coast… the Olympics are here

Ever wanted to meet an Olympic medallist or try your hand at an Olympic sport? Well now is your chance. Join us at Kurrawa Park on 21 July from 4pm as we kick-off our Olympic live site.

Celebrate all things Olympics in a family-friendly evening of kids’ activities, fireworks, sporting competitions, live entertainment, beach volleyball and more. With something on offer for every age group, bring the whole family along to test your athletic ability in Olympic sport activities like basketball, soccer, athletics, fun relay races, baseball, badminton and rugby.

Love being a spectator? Sit back and watch the big screen live action as the Westfield Matildas play against New Zealand. Stay tuned on the night as we cross live to Tokyo at 6pm to find out if Brisbane will be named as host city for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Don't forget to plan your trip ahead and catch the G:Link to Broadbeach North or make your journey active and walk, ride, scoot or skate to the event.

The fun doesn't stop there though - you can continue to cheer on our other Aussie athletes competing for the duration of the games, with the action of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics streaming on the big screen from 21 July to 8 August at the site. Head to our Facebook event page for all the details.

Our beaches

Help care for our beaches

Get your hands sandy and join Our Beaches Community to care for our precious dune ecosystem.

Plant native species in our dunes, help identify and remove weeds, collect litter and learn about the plants and animals that call our Gold Coast beaches home in these interactive sessions.

Join us for some zen at our Sunday event - we've connected with Jala Yoga to offer a rejuvenating morning of yoga followed by a family-friendly beach clean up.

Fire escape

Take 5, get out alive

When's the last time you checked your smoke alarms or thought about your fire escape plan? A house fire can move fast and fill a house with toxic smoke, so having working smoke alarms and a well-practised escape plan can save lives.

Thinking about a fire in your home can be scary, but making your fire escape plan, and practising it, doesn't have to be. Young children and the elderly are most at risk in a house fire, so make sure everyone in the household knows their role and a safe meeting point.

Head to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services website to go through the essential checklist to ensure your house is safe. Make a start today and check that hallways, doorways and pathways are clear of clutter and identify if there are two exits in each room to help speed up an escape.
