No Images? Click here Dear Friend of PLC Welcome back for the start of Term 2; hopefully you found time over the school holidays to rest and refresh a little with your family and friends. Most of my week off was spent cleaning out our house in preparation for the move into the School residence at 32 McNeil Street. The contracted completion date is 30 June and at this stage the build is both on time and on budget; as such, I anticipate our family will move in soon after this date. We will be opening the front garden on Open Garden Day. This term there are a number of commitments that will take me off campus. It is unfortunate they happen to fall in the same school term, however, our Deputy Principal, Dr Andrew Cousins is a very capable leader, and will assume the role of Acting Principal in my absence. In Week 2 I will be in Adelaide at the Alliance of Girls’ Schools conference and will take this opportunity to visit a number of schools there. In Week 3 I’m very excited to be heading down south with our Year 8 girls on their Outdoor Education programme. Finally, in Week 8 I have been invited to present at the Global Forum on Girls' Education in Washington. I will use this opportunity to visit a number of schools and universities in the week preceding the conference with a particular focus on Science and Innovation. ANZAC ServiceWe will be starting Term 2 off with our ANZAC Service in the Hugh Baird Sports Centre on Monday 30 April at 8.30 am. All parents are warmly invited to attend this special service when we remember all who served and died in war and on operational service past and present. Master Planning – STEM and MusicThe PLC Council is now in the final stages of considering the School Master Plan Vision document that provides a guide for the School with an outlook of approximately 20 years. We are now working on the phasing of projects over the next six years. These are likely to be a new music facility and a Science and Innovation Centre where the George Nisbet Dods Memorial Library currently stands, along with the floor above this space. In Week 3, the Junior School is hosting an exciting STEM incursion with a host of external experts invited in to lead the day of learning for our girls in Years 5 and 6. This is the start of what will be a growing focus on Science and Innovation at PLC. Sign up to the G8’s to have your say on STEM at PLC, moving forwardAs with all development projects at the School, we are seeking your input. We have made available a number of G8 opportunities with staff leading the curriculum re-design so you can have your say regarding what you think is important with regard to Science and Innovation. The purpose of these discussions is to explore topics such as but not limited to:
Dr Andrew Cousins will take the lead on this project. Given Andrew’s PhD topic focused on gender inclusivity in senior chemistry, along with having been a former Head of Science and senior chemistry teacher, he is well-placed to lead this project. It would be wonderful to have substantial parent input into the development phase of this project. Please sign up to a G8 here and use the code vb5w6. Alternatively, if you are unable to attend but would like to provide feedback please email Andrew at Andrew.Cousins@plc.wa.edu.au. As always, I’m excited to welcome the girls back on campus on Monday morning. Keep our Year 10 – 12’s in your thoughts as they head into exams in Week 2; best wishes girls, remember exams as just an opportunity to show everyone how amazing you are! - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Junior & Senior School Term 2 Uniform RequirementsThe Uniform Shop (now located in the Lighthouse with parking available under the building) will be open at the following additional day at the start of Term 2: Normal Shop Hours Term Time: Winter Uniform Although the weather has been a little cooler, we will still have warmer days in the lead up to winter. Ties and berets are optional in Senior School while in Junior School, berets must be worn and the tie is optional. There may be times that the School requests the tie be worn, for example for formal presentations. It will be required for Year 7 to 12 students for Principal’s Assembly every second Friday of term. Hard copies are in the process of being sent to those subscribers who do not wish to receive the digital edition. Friday 18 MayAll parents would have received in their inbox a few weeks ago, an invitation to a PLC Night of Inspiration, to be held at Frasers on Friday 18 May. This is a new event to the PLC calendar. Community members would be aware that the Year 12 ball was this year held on campus in response to feedback from the Senior School students. However, a non-refundable booking fee had already been paid to Frasers to hold the event there. After discussions with parents, including a straw poll held at this year’s Welcome Sundowner, it was decided to host a parents’ event at the venue so the funds were not wasted. The night will be a celebration of PLC achievements and feature Old Collegians Rebecca Grace (1983), Kate Stannage (1983), Jane Humphrys (1992), Fiona Boyce (2004) and Grace Newton-Wordsworth (2013) with Dixie Marshall (1980) as Master of Ceremonies. There will be great Live Music by the Lush Band featuring Old Collegian, Sam Lugge (1984).
