Industrial Sustainability Tools Day

On October 9th thirty people from across the four universities of the Centre gathered to share experiences and knowledge about tool development. The aim was to prepare the cohort to deliver quality tools as part of their PhD or Centre projects. There were presentations from tool developers who are part of the PrISMS programme as well as serial tool builders from the academic side of the Centre  >more.

Quick Guides

The first set of 8 Quick Guides are now available for download from the Centre Website.  The intention behind the Quick Guides is to make the knowledge generated by the researchers in the Centre accessible for industry and businesses. You can download the Quick Guides > here.

CSIS Day at Imperial College

The Configurations for Sustainable Industrial Systems research group gathered in Imperial College to share the latest progress in their research, plan for the following year and to test out new techniques for the first time. There was a lively industrial mapping session where the researchers were challenged to construct a map of the industrial system with careful guidance from session leader Dr Doroteya Vladirimova. The aim of the mapping exercise was to find ways to represent the industrial system which will help identify the key points in the system, where interventions can be most successful and where unusual partners may be found. The group also began planning research and project activities for the year ahead with projects ready to go and Quick Guides in the pipeline. If you'd like to know more about CSIS as a whole and how you can get involved please contact Dr Dai Morgan (dcm32@cam.ac.uk) and if you'd like to know more about industrial system mapping please contact Dr Doroteya Vladirimova (dkv21@cam.ac.uk).

Sustainable manufacturing – Starting the journey

The IET have just published their latest Insight “Sustainable manufacturing – Starting the journey” written by Dr Peter Ball. Their Insight series seek to provide a quick overview of an area in an accessible way and provide pointers to relevant issues.  This publication on sustainable manufacturing is written for the IET membership and beyond to take stock and provoke thoughts on the future.  This one has a mainly eco-efficiency view focus leaving the opportunity for future insights on the more dramatic changes needed. Thank you to those in the Centre for providing feedback on the drafts. In the small print at the back Peter has managed to insert reference to the Centre and a few of its members! Introducing Dr Mélanie Despeisse

Congratulations to Dr Mélanie Despeisse upon completion of her PhD in Sustainable Manufacturing at Cranfield University. Mélanie’s PhD research was on identifying improvement opportunities in manufacturing operations using process flow modelling to increase resource efficiency. During her time at Cranfield, Mélanie also worked on the THERM project in partnership with Airbus, Toyota, De Montfort University and IES Ltd.  Since June 2013, Mélanie has been a Lead Researcher with the Performance Variation Grand Challenge and has been based at Cambridge University. Her research interests focus on the relationship between industry and environmental sustainability at various scales. She is currently spending 6 months in Japan at Keio University (Yokohama, south-east of Tokyo) and will return to Cambridge in April.

Centre PhD wins photo prize

CIS PhD researcher Ionnis Mastoris and Cambridge lecturer, Dr Ronan Daly, were joint winners of the second prize in the annual Zeiss Photographic Competition in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University with their electron microscopy image of the reflective coating and fibrous cloth of a man-made fabric (above). The photograph was taken as part of a research project focusing on the life cycle of these fabrics, from which the findings could be utilised to help decrease the environmental impact of the fibre-dyeing process.
