Links eNewsletter - Term 1 Week 5 Dear valued member of the PLC community, While schools are fundamentally centres for education, learning should encompass rich experiences and develop skills beyond the WACE and IB curriculum. PLC is very proud of its exceptional Music and Performing Arts community, and I would like to highlight the extraordinary work done within these passion-driven and far-reaching programmes. MusicIn Music, we currently have more than 400 students from Pre-Kindergarten through to Year 12 learning an instrument and 300 girls are involved in PLC’s 22 different ensembles. The Music community values inclusivity, the pursuit of excellence, fun, and the joy of music-making. Coming up in the calendar, we have the highly anticipated annual Quarry Concert on Sunday 7 March. This is held in the Quarry Amphitheatre in City Beach and involves 170 Senior School girls. The building of the new Music Centre will also get underway later this year. DanceIn Dance, there are 65 girls in Co-curricular Dance, all working towards the Dance Showcase in August. The Dance staff strive for excellence, but also focus on the pure joy of Dance that our girls experience. The programme aims to extend and inspire the students’ potential, free their sense of self and encourage and nurture their individuality. Students are given the opportunity to work with nationally and internationally recognised choreographers and Dance artists who extend their knowledge of Dance, but also elevate their level of professionalism in performance. DramaIn Drama, we have three exciting productions spread over three terms. In Term 1, we have Emilia from 25 to 27 March. This award-winning play is based on the life of a seventeenth-century poet Emilia Bassano; a strong feminist who paved the way for many to follow in her footsteps. In Term 3, there will be a combined PLC and Scotch College musical – Mama Mia! Over 60 million people around the globe have fallen in love with the story and music that makes Mama Mia! the ultimate feel-good musical which celebrates love, laughter, family, and friendship – just what the world needs right now. More than 150 girls auditioned for the 50 places available in this production which will premiere on Monday 9 August. Term 4 will then wrap up the year with Matilda for students from Years 7 to 10. This musical was inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl with original songs written by Perth local Tim Minchin. Save the performance dates 11 to 13 November. After so many event cancellations and virtual-only performances in 2020, I am thrilled that we have so much to look forward to this year in the Performing Arts. - Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal It was wonderful to see our well-rested students bound back into School on Tuesday. The School has been a hive of activity this week, with incursions and excursions in addition to the existing rich programme. Playgroup@PLCWe have a wonderful playgroup that commences tomorrow. If you know anyone with a baby or small children (ages 0 to 4) looking for the Playgroup experience, please forward them the information found at the end of this Links eNewlsletter. UniformNow that we have well and truly settled into the year, I will be reintroducing House Points for students wearing their correct PLC summer uniform with pride. The main focus will be on Years 3 to 6 and I’ll be looking for panamas, hair ribbons (white, Blackwatch tartan, tri-colour, or the white scrunchie), and the correct socks. In 2020, a number of places on the House Points Ladder were changed due to the uniform points collected. I will also be checking for hats at break times. This is also a great time to remind the community to rename all uniform items, bags, lunch boxes, etc. - Richard Wright – Head of Junior School Year 4 OEP Information SessionDate: Tuesday 9 March Chapel Years 3 to 6Date: Thursday 11 March Junior School Assembly (Hosted by Year 6)Date: Friday 12 March I hope that all our students have returned from the Mid-term Break feeling refreshed and ready to engage fully with their academics and co-curricular activities. Cyber Safety Social Media PresentationOn Tuesday evening, Year 8 parents and students had the opportunity to hear from one of Australia’s leading cyber safety experts, Jordan Foster. Jordan is a clinical psychologist and Managing Director of ySafe. While a video of the presentation is available on the PLC Gallery for those parents who were unable to attend, we invite all parents to watch this valuable presentation. Jordan had many messages that were valuable to both students and parents, and I wanted to share five of her top tips to help your daughter manage a healthy use of technology:

Room of the Week:
Did you know that we have tutoring at the Boarding House? Thanks to Thomas Hickmott, our Boarding House Learning Co-ordinator, boarders have the opportunity to receive tutoring from existing and past teachers of PLC. This gives the girls a chance to access higher academic capabilities. The School offers tutoring across multiple subjects such as Maths, Science, English, and Humanities. Mondays are the busiest and everyone enjoys the help offered. Students make strong and lasting connections with their teachers, which continue until graduation! We are so grateful for the teachers who come and dedicate their time and knowledge to the Boarding House – you are the best! - Boarding House Prefects Make A Difference WeekNext week, the Senior School community is committed to making a difference. With both an environmental focus and an International Women’s Day 2021 #ChoosetoChallenge theme, the students will be encouraged to look at waste, create beeswax wraps, exchange clothing and accessories through an ethical fashion swap, help create a Noongar six seasons art piece and explore what it means to be inspiring strong women.
