Senior School Performing ArtsOur talented Music students took to the stage for the Chamber Spring Concert last night, while our IGSSA Dance students will perform at Penrhos College tonight. Congratulations to all the girls involved and an enormous thanks to the staff who organised each of these events. I am sure that all parents and family members involved would agree that your effort was appreciated by everyone who attended. Father’s Day BreakfastIt was wonderful to see so many of our dads at the Father’s Day Breakfast this morning. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father's Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the Sun as the father of the universe. As we know, Father’s Day in Australia occurs on the first Sunday of September. Father’s Day in some countries is on the third Sunday of June, which is close to the June solstice. The idea of a special day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations and planned a day to honour fathers early in the 20th century, with the first recorded Father's Day being celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. When I was young, I don’t know that I ever took the time to think about where Father's Day originated from, I also don’t know that I truly appreciated the role my father had played in my life and in helping me to become the person I was. I think I probably took him for granted at times and just presumed that it was his job to always be there for me, to look after me and protect me. I don’t know if I ever really thought about how tough a job it is to be the father of a daughter. Years ago I heard a song that made me think about my dad. It resonated with me and made me realise that, as hard as I thought it was to be his daughter, I think it was just as hard if not harder, to be my dad. Gord Bamford’s ‘My Daughter’s Father’ includes the lyrics: To all the dads in our community, know that you do change the world, you change your daughter’s world. And in your daughter’s eyes, whether she tells you that you do or not, she really does think that you walk on water. I wish all of the dads in our community a relaxing Father’s Day on Sunday. - Cate Begbie, Principal PLC in Katanning - Meet & Greet SundownerDate: Friday 6 September The Sundowner will be an opportunity for Katanning (and surrounding areas) residents, interested in hearing about the exciting future plans for PLC, to catch up with Principal, Cate Begbie, Director of Boarding, Liz Langdon and Director of Wellbeing, Chonny James. There are many staff members who worked behind the scenes to ensure the day was a success. However, it is the girls who make the day fly so high. The hours that have been put in to preparing dances, choirs, textile projects, art-work, photographs, musical performances, public speaking and drama performances are what makes Arts day truly memorable. I would like to congratulate the girls for being so willing to take part and showing such commitment to the event. Year 12 Mock ExamsBalancing Study and HealthOur Year 12 girls are now well and truly into their preparations for Mock Exams. Girls, I ask that you please find a good balance of study and health. Study is very important, but of equal importance is mental and physical wellbeing. The ability to engage the brain is strengthened when the body is rested and invigorated by some physical activity. Even if this is just finding time for a walk every day. Study SessionWe will be offering a Year 12 study session at the beginning of the day on Friday 30 August with Elevate Education. This is designed to give them a range of proven strategies to make their study more efficient and effective. I hope that the girls find this session as helpful as previous Year groups have done.
