Links - Term 3 Week 8 From the Head of Lighthouse CurriculumReframing Failure“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” Carol Dweck, a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, has studied the reactions people have to failure. Fixed Mindset Amongst her findings, she has discovered that when people attribute failures to their worth as a person, and as a finite measure of their ability, it leads to increased levels of anxiety and the tendency to avoid challenges that may result in further failure. She calls this a ‘fixed mindset’ – the way we think about ourselves can’t be challenged or improved. Growth Mindset Professor Dweck suggests there is a different, more constructive way to approach failure, obstacles and setbacks. She encourages us to think about our talents and abilities as being constantly developing, and challenges, such as assessments, as good ways to try out our skills and help us get smarter. The results we get from assessments can give us information about ourselves that we can use to learn and set new goals for the future. This approach is what she calls a ‘growth mindset’. In this ‘growth mindset’ way of thinking, our ability is not set and we can develop our abilities, skills and knowledge through hard work, strategic planning, with help and mentoring from others. Reframe Your Thinking Can you react to failure in a constructive way? How can you reframe failure so that it enhances your learning? Dweck says you can reframe your thinking about failure by asking yourself these questions:
Over the school holidays, spend some time thinking about how you can modify your reaction to failure, and how you can use it as motivation to learn, grow and achieve everything you are capable of. You can watch this short video for more information about Prof Dweck and her research. - Emily Lockhart, Head of Lighthouse Curriculum Waste Wise AccreditationThe Civics and Social Justice Captain, Service Captain and Environmental Captain have been engaged in waste audits, the no single-use cup programme, bush fire fundraisers, free dress days and food composting! The little ones participated in lots of fun activities, including a parent-student game of 'musical freeze'! Junior School Arts WeekWe complete Term 3 with our Junior School Arts Week! As we are still under Level 4 COVID restrictions, we do have some adjustments to the week. Firstly, we ask that parents do not attend Grandparents and Special Friends Day (Tuesday 22 September), unless you are needed to provide assistance. As part of that day, we are also not holding our traditional morning tea due to the COVID guidelines we have in place. The slipway closest to the Junior School main entrance will be reserved for dropping off and picking up our special visitors, allowing easy access into the building. We request that cars are not parked in the slipways. At our other Arts Week events, we ask parents and guests in attendance to maintain social distancing. The parent programme of Arts Week events is available here. Year 6 ExhibitionAs part of taking action related to social justice, Year 6 student, Maya Yew would like to collect donations of new stationery to donate to children who do not have access to resources for their education. Maya is also looking for donations of old stationery such as exercise books, pens, pencils and rulers, which she can then repurpose to build a sculpture to represent her learning of the issue. Donations may be dropped into the buckets provided at the Junior School Reception. - Richard Wright, Head of Junior School Junior School Upcoming EventsGrandparents & Special Friends DayDate: Tuesday 22 September Junior School Arts DaysDate: Wednesday 23 & Thursday 24 September End of Term 3 – early finishA reminder Term 3 comes to an end on Friday, 25 September.
