HOTA Gallery Under Construction
News update

February 2021

HOTA Gallery reaches completion

A new striking cultural beacon on the city's skyline, the $60.5 million HOTA Gallery has reached construction completion.

It is almost eight years from when the City launched an international design competition to find a design which truly reflected the Gold Coast and embraced the city’s unique character.

Now the largest piece of the puzzle – the international standard AAA-rated HOTA Gallery - is complete and being prepared for the May 2021 public opening.

HOTA Gallery managing contractor Hansen Yuncken commenced construction of the gallery just over two years ago.

The contractor has finished construction, taking extra time to ensure the building and landscape was completed to the highest standards befitting the City’s significant collection and first exhibition.

The building is ready for HOTA to occupy and install art ahead of the official opening in May.

HOTA staff are now preparing to occupy the gallery with training underway on operations, plant and equipment.

A key economic and cultural generator

Rooftop experience overlooking the city skyline.

The transformation of Evandale into the city’s Home of the Arts is a 10-15 year project bringing ongoing jobs and significant economic benefits to the city.

It is a catalyst for the city’s creative economy and will diversify our cultural tourism offerings

The gallery construction has provided:

  • 1400 jobs of which 905 have been for local Gold Coast-based workers.
  • A total of 1440 inductions completed on site.
  • Key contracts for 122 sub-contractors and suppliers, of which 105 are South East Queensland based.
  • Training and skills opportunities for 36 new apprentices/trainees.

HOTA Gallery exterior.

A design that reflects the Gold Coast's personality

The bold colours and architectural form reflects the Gold Coast's personality - youthful, ambitious, adaptable and collaborative.

The exterior features an iconic coloured façade comprising glass and aluminium panels designed to create a ‘cultural beacon’.

From yellows to blues and greens, shaped in the voronoi patttern, it is a nod to the city's sub-tropical environment and inspired by one of the City Collection's signature pieces, William Robinson's The Rainforest.

The slender skeletal structure of the feature stair is part of the gallery experience. Starting in the airy entry foyer it winds up the building to the rooftop terrace with rich dark hues of oven dried blackbutt timber.

Showcasing local artists and touring exhibitions, HOTA Gallery will be a platform for locals and visitors of all ages to engage with art and each other.

What's inside the gallery

The children's gallery flows out to an external courtyard.

One of the key features is an expansive 1000 square metre exhibition gallery. It will be a drawcard for national and international blockbuster exhibitions.

The tower has 900sqm of permanent collection space over three levels, connected by a main stair offering views to the city, hinterland and the other recently delivered assets of HOTA Outdoor Stage and Green Bridge.

In keeping with the vision to provide unexpected opportunities to engage with art, the 1000 square metres of collection storage area can be viewed from the main entry level, adjacent to the main exhibition hall.

A 145 square metre children's gallery will flow out to an external courtyard - a gated space also shared with an artist's workshop.

There will also be a retail space and cafe on the entry level.
