We begin a new year celebrating several alumni and faculty members who were honoured with the prestigious Order of Canada for their many contributions to the advancement of health in our communities: Paul Armstrong, officer of the Order of Canada, professor of medicine and director of the Canadian VIGOUR Centre Tom Feasby, member of
the Order of Canada, former Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs (now neurologist at the University of Calgary) Eric Schloss, member of the Order of Canada, ’59 BA, ’63 MD, clinical professor of dermatology Joseph B. Martin, officer of the Order of Canada, ‘62 MD, former Dean of Harvard, U of A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 2007 and U of A Honorary Degree recipient in 1988.
This month our alumna Verna Yiu,
MD ’86, president and CEO of Alberta Health Services, is presenting a free public lecture about “The Power of Storytelling to Improve Healthcare” on Jan. 29. We hope you will join us if you are in the area. You can read more about her vision on storytelling for better patient care here. In this issue you will also learn about our faculty members’ recent advances for cancer treatment and the development of a Hep. C vaccine. Thank you to all who sent us submissions for the contest to find the new name of our alumni newsletter. The contest closed on Jan. 18. We are gathering all your suggestions and will present the finalists in the February newsletter.
