National Volunteer Week: Surf Lifesavers Changing Communities and Changing LivesThis month we celebrated National Volunteer Week (18 May - 24 May 2020) which is a time to acknowledge the people of Australia who generously donate their time to help better the lives of others. Surf lifesavers are some of the most dedicated and outstanding volunteers who really do change communities and change lives. To celebrate National Volunteer Week and to recognise the outstanding efforts of our volunteers, we profiled a series of members from NSW surf clubs. Keep reading to learn more about some of our outstanding volunteers! Ngiare Brown: Proud Yuin Woman and Passionate VolunteerProfessor Ngiare Brown is a Yuin Woman, passionate volunteer and surf sports advocate at Coledale Surf Life Saving Club - and an affiliate of Wanda and Warilla-Barrack Point. Not only does she dedicate her time to the Surf Life Saving movement, but she was also the first Aboriginal doctor in NSW and is a gold medal outrigger crewmember. Chloe Carr: 2020 NSW Junior Lifesaver of the YearChloe Carr is a member of Bungan Beach SLSC and was just last month, named the 2020 SLSNSW Female Junior Lifesaver of the Year. She is one of our inspirational members we profiled as part of National Volunteer Week 2020. Maroubra Man Saved by Quick Thinking and Joint ResponseQuick thinking by a group of off-duty lifesavers, combined with the assistance of Lifeguards and paramedics, saved the life of a 30-year-old man at Maroubra Beach in Sydney this month. Lifesavers Bringing CPR Training to Your Living RoomIn a first, Surf Life Saving NSW has launched a ground-breaking online CPR training program in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact more people are working, exercising and socialising at home due to social distancing measures. Kate Broadhurst: Leading Inclusive Programs on the Central CoastFormer Ironwoman Kate Broadhurst from Avoca Beach SLSC and North Entrance SLSC has been leading inclusive programs on the Central Coast since the launch of the Avoca Beach Sharks Nippers in 2016. “Mega Men” Rescue 16-Year-Old Boy at Coledale Beach, IllawarraAn off-duty surf lifesaver is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of a 16-year-old boy who was caught in large swell at Coledale Beach earlier this week. A local resident who had been walking near the beach phoned Triple-Zero after noticing the boy in trouble in the large swell. Maureen Worth: A Lifetime of VolunteeringMaureen Worth is a Life Member of North Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club and has dedicated a lifetime of service to the Surf Life Saving movement. Enrolling her children in Nippers kick-started Maureen's involvement and since then she has held numerous positions, helping out wherever she could. Emma Leggett - Budden: Young InnovatorEmma Leggett-Budden hails from Bungan Beach SLSC. She recently invented a solution to help IRB crews move outboard motors safely. Sharkskin Supports Frontline Healthcare WorkersWhen the Coronavirus pandemic reached Australian shores, both domestic retail sales and international exports were impacted, leaving many local manufacturers in hot water. But using some Aussie ingenuity, watersports apparel manufacturer Sharkskin has risen to the challenge, transforming their factory into a production line for protective equipment for frontline healthcare workers. Race Analysis SeriesIn episode two of the Race Analysis Series, newly qualified Australian Olympic Kayaker Riley Fitzsimmons sits down with his partner and champion Ironwoman Georgia Miller to talk through the Australian Ski final. Riley provides some great insights and tips for young ski paddlers especially on the return to the beach. Jackson Towns: Passionate Volunteer Surf Lifesaver and Emergency Service ProfessionalJackson Towns has been a member of Elouera SLSC for ten years, and when he isn't patrolling or volunteering as a Duty Officer, he works full-time for another NSW emergency service organisation. Celebrating Women in Surf Life SavingTo help celebrate the 40th anniversary of women as active surf lifesavers, we are calling for stories, photos and video of trailblazing women in the surf lifesaving movement. July 1 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of women's involvement in active surf lifesaving duties. SLSA Female Mentoring ProgramNominations are now open for SLSA's new Female Mentoring Program. The Program aims to support and encourage confident, strong and skilled female representation within SLS, to strengthen leadership skills and identify and develop the next generation of female leaders to position SLS for the future. |
