Top 100 Golf Courses "BiteSize" - January 2015

It has been a bizarre start to the 2015 golfing season, with Robert Allenby claiming that he was kidnapped, robbed, beaten and dumped in a park in Hawaii after missing the cut in the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club. Meanwhile, in Italy, a cameraman smashed Tiger Woods in the face, knocking out one of his teeth and cracking another, while the former World No.1 watched his girlfriend claim a record 63rd World Cup Alpine ski win. Then Martin Kaymer went on record saying he was “glad” he blew a 10-shot lead to lose the Abu Dhabi Championship earlier this month.

Thankfully events at Top 100 have been rather more “run of the mill” except, of course, for our intrepid Fergal O’Leary, who has returned to the U.S. after playing sixteen top ranked courses in eleven days.

How difficult is it to play the World Top 100?

Cape Kidnappers, New Zealand

An increasing number of World Top 100 lists, published by numerous sources, have not made the task any easier. Fergal’s latest Antipodean adventure takes him to 99 played, with only Durban Country Club to go. To read more about Fergal’s recent trip to Australia and New Zealand, click one of the links below.

Is the Baja California peninsula golfing heaven?

Quivira, Mexico

The quality of Mexican courses has always been good, but the bar was raised in 2010 by the addition of three new courses on the Baja California peninsula. At the end of 2014, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Quivira Golf Club opened, pushing the bar even higher. Javier Pintos played Quivira recently: “WOW! One thousand times WOW!! This is maybe the most spectacular piece of land on which I have played golf in my entire life.”

Leicestershire & Rutland Best In County Update

Luffenham Heath, England

Most English golfers that travel to play the best golf courses have heard of Luffenham Heath, but few golfers outside the Midland region will have heard of Longcliffe Golf Club. To date, only one of our team has played Longcliffe, where the fairways weave through the ancient Charnwood Forest, and he concurs that it is indeed an underrated course – we should listen to him more carefully in the future.
