Exploring and Understanding Educational Approaches at ELNC19 There was a time when teachers would teach the way they had learned, with little regard to the needs of the student. However, a quick Google search shows the diversity of educational approaches and how they are constantly evolving. Seattle Kicks off Regional Alumni Gatherings Nearly thirty alumni and friends gathered on a rainy Seattle evening at Copperworks Distilling Company to kick off the first regional alumni gathering of the school year. Sports Updates Boys' Golf Davis Shenkman, David Cottam, and Patrick Funke-Rapp all finished in the top 10 golfers at the Region Tournament to qualify for State. The competition was tough at the State Tournament but the Wasatch Academy #1 golfer, Davis Shenkman, made it to the final day of the competition and finished in the top 15 Utah golfers. Girls' Tennis The Girls' Tennis team had no varsity returners and only two JV returners from last year's senior-heavy team. Despite the inexperience of the team, new coaches Barry and Brenda Jessee helped the players improve their set win total each match. Cross Country Ashley Lagat was the Utah Region Champion with teammate Purity Kattam as the runner up. On the boys’ side, Chris Korir was the Utah Region Champion with teammates Ben Sparks taking 5th and Hongjie Luo taking 13th. The Wasatch Academy runners did very well at the State Championship with Chris Korir finishing 2nd, Ashley Lagat finishing 4th, and Purity Kattam at 7th. Ben Sparks also had a very respectable finish time that was outside of the top 10. Baseball The Baseball Team had a good season behind the leadership of returning players Anthon Varga, Joseph Allen Loftin, and Jadon Bucklin. Coaches Dixon, Toriyabe, and Mondragon were able to provide the wisdom and positive team culture for constant improvement of the team. Boys' Volleyball The Boys' Volleyball Team tied for 3rd place in the Division but lost the coin toss and will enter the USSA State Tournament as the 4th seed. The team, led by captains Sam Wood and Finn Peterson, are poised to make a deep run into the tournament October 29 through November 2. Girls' Volleyball The Girls' Volleyball Team had a great season in which they won the Region Championship and are currently ranked 3rd in the State of Utah. This team, lead by Coach Shelby Eliason, has earned a bye for the first round of the State Tournament and are peaking at the right time of year. Returners Rokiatou & Assetou Diop, Olivia Jessee, Albe Ward, and Chloe Evans have continued the team culture of hard work, dedication, and team unity. Newcomers Debora Reis, Duda Raimundo, Nataly Dunka, Jexi Lott, Betty Nagy, and Anastasia Christensen have all made huge contributions to what might be the best Wasatch Academy Volleyball Team to date.
