No Images? Click here Dear Friend of PLC The Magic of MusicMusic education is so important, the value it provides extends well beyond the four walls of a classroom. As a musician I have experienced first-hand the sense of achievement, the opportunity to develop mastery and take responsible risks and the sense of community it can create. Music is a universal interest, for just about everyone it forms part of our everyday life. More than this, making music provides a wonderful chance to build imagination, increase coordination and to prepare students to be active contributors to a creative economy. There is a substantial body of research which has established the relationship between music education and academic performance. Whether it be the ‘Mozart effect’, enhanced cognitive performance, or the development of memory, what this research really boils down to, is that music making can really assist you to feel good and function well. These same benefits are also derived from the opportunities provided when girls are part of the Dance and/or Drama Programmes at PLC. The sense of ensemble as these girls harness their creativity in a way which is collaborative, connected and meaningful, is phenomenal. This creativity has been on display over the last number of weeks across the entire school. There have been numerous opportunities in the Junior and Senior School for the girls to showcase an amazing semester of work. I would particularly like to thank Jessica Sardi, Patrice Smith and Bauke Snyman, for their leadership in Music, Dance and Drama respectively. It is through their guidance that these disciplines continue to provide performance opportunities for every girl at PLC, where they can demonstrate courage and refine their leadership, as a member of an ensemble, company or cast. Photos from the Endeavour Dance Showcase last weekend We look forward to the performances continuing this Saturday, as members of the PLC Pipe Band lead the chant in support of our rowers at the Head of the River Regatta at Champion Lakes. The rowers have had a wonderful season and I encourage you to join with the cheer leaders, and the pipes and drums, in barracking from the bank to support the girls. We are holding a rowing assembly tomorrow morning to wish the girls every success at the regatta on Saturday. The assembly will also provide an opportunity for the community to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Annette Pearce (Head of Sport) and David Milne (Head Rowing Coach) throughout the 2019 rowing season. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Acting Principal Please note that all parent events are listed in the Communications & Engagement section of Links. Senior School Winter Warmer - Term 2 AppealPLC’s culture of supporting our community and those less fortunate, continues in Term 2 as we support various projects in partnership with the Australian Red Cross. The deadline for donations has been extended to Friday 28 June. Donations will be collected in House Tutor groups. Senior School Free Dress Day - Friday 28 JuneThe Term 2 Free Dress Day will be held on Friday 28 June, with the theme “Memes and Vines”. The optional fundraiser supports our two World Vision sponsored children, and the many projects organised by UnitingCare West to support those most vulnerable in our community. Students who opted in to participate, donated $10 in Term 1 for the privilege of wearing themed dress across three free dress days this year. Click here for some free dress costume ideas! Parent/Teacher meetings and Three-way ConferencesWe look forward to our parents and guardians coming to the school next week for the three-way conferences in Years 3 to 6 and the parent/teacher meetings in Kindy to Year 2. This is your opportunity to discuss with your child’s teacher (and daughter for the older students), your daughter’s strengths and areas for growth. The Semester 1 report will be prominent in the conversation. This year we have endeavoured to publish assessment data in real time on SEQTA. This is a measure designed to keep parents informed of their child’s progress and this data is used to create the Semester 1 report. Migration MuseumThis week, we saw our Year 6 students transform our School into a Migration Museum. A tremendous amount of effort was put in by the students to outline their family’s migration to Australia. The displays were comprehensive and gave all visitors an excellent representation of how our nation has been constructed since colonisation. The PLC community is representative of so many people coming from numerous nations to build a better life for their families. The stories of the difficulties endured and their resilience and perseverance, provide an inspirational message to us as the future generations. Staff RecognitionI would like to recognise and congratulate Ms Siobhan Rooney, ILT Integration Specialist in the Junior School, for her selection as an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) for 2019. Ms Rooney joins an elite group of global educators who have been recognised for doing amazing things with Apple technology, in and out of the classroom. They explore new ideas, seek new paths, and embrace new opportunities. Only 20 AEDs are selected in Australia each year, so we are very lucky to have Ms Rooney sharing her knowledge and passion for technology and innovation with our girls in the Junior School. - Mr Richard Wright, Head of Junior School Playgroup@PLCWe are very excited to announce that in Terms 3 and 4, PLC will offer a Playgroup on campus aimed at children aged 0 - 4 years, which will be parent run and aligned with Playgroup WA. JUNIOR SCHOOL EVENTSJunior School Assembly (hosted by Year 3) Date: Friday 28 June Parent / Teacher Interviews Date: Monday 1 July - Wednesday 3 July Chapel Years 2 - 6 Date: Wednesday 3 July Last Day of Term 2 Date: Friday 2 July (normal dismissal times) I was very privileged to attend the amazing performances of the students that participated in the Endeavour Dance Showcase on Friday evening. The precision and unison of the dancer’s movements, the convincing expressions and the detailed choreography, were mesmerising, and the audience was taken on an emotional journey as the students performed a range of genres, including hip hop and contemporary, within different groups and as solo performers. Such an event does not occur without a lot of time and effort by the students and staff involved, particularly Ms Patrice Smith and Ms Caroline Fuhr, so they are all to be congratulated on another successful Showcase. As the term winds down and everyone starts to look ahead and prepare for the holidays, it is really important that students remain present and engaged in their classes. Whilst many assessments will be complete and girls await their report cards, all classes will be working on content that is relevant and valuable – whether it is confirming knowledge that they have recently learnt, or starting on the content for the next unit of work. End of Term ArrangementsThe end of Term 2 is Friday 5 July. If students are leaving earlier, please ensure they have informed their tutor and that their lockers have been cleaned out before heading off on break. - Lynne Jones, Deputy Head of Senior School Years 9 and10 AMC Maths Competition 2019This competition is designed to test mathematical thinking rather than focus on calculations themselves, thus such questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator, as with one. The problems get more difficult through the competition, so that at the end they are challenging to the most gifted students. This year, the competition will be completed online.
