SLDL November Newsletter

The SLDL office hopes to engage students, faculty, and staff in ways
that promote and develop an inclusive and diverse environment.
We oversee student clubs and the Graduate Student Council, promote student engagement, host events and workshops related to diversity and leadership, advise international students, promote mentorship, and manage health insurance enrollment. Visit SLDL for the unveiling of the altar for Dia de los Muertos to reflect on and honor those lost during the pandemic. Hot chocolate, coffee and sweet bread will be provided.

CGU's Realizing Equity Research Symposium 

  • Introduction Event- Thursday, November 4th | 3 PM - 4 PM
    Find out about the upcoming virtual symposium in spring of 2022 and how you can participate! Learn about the session formats and how your research-in-progress can be shared to gain key peer and faculty feedback. All disciplines welcome.
  • Elements of a Conference Proposal and Abstract- Saturday, November 13th | 10 AM - 11 AM 
    Join experts from the CWR in this prep session to explore information often required in a conference proposal submission. Learn the components of a well-done abstract.

From DACA to Citizenship: Current Trends that Dreamers and Allies Should Know About 

Monday, November 8th | 12 PM - 1 PM 

Join representatives from the Immigration Resource Center of San Gabriel Valley to hear important information including: 1) Current and pending impacts of the judicial and legislative actions that affect DACA, 2) Typical pathways someone who is DACAmented/undocumented might follow to become a legal permanent resident, and 3) Current policies around enforcement and “Know Your Rights” information.

Transgender Day of Remembrance 

Saturday, November 20th 

Transgender Day of Remembrance was established in 1998 to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of transphobia and to raise awareness of the continued violence endured by the transgender community.

De-Stress Week

Save the date for De-Stress Week. Beginning Monday, November 29, SLDL & the Office of Student Engagement will co-host a week of fun and reflective activities. Join us throughout the week for games, quiet study hours, motivational sessions, food and more! Special guests from CDO, PFF, CWR and GSC will be joining throughout the week to support students as we close out the semester!

Students have an opportunity to submit their words of thanks to veterans or active duty service members. Submissions will be posted online on our Virtual Thank You Wall and social media.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop 

Wednesday, November 10th | 12 PM - 1 PM

SLDL will host an Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students, especially those who are planning to apply for pre/post completion OPT during the current or upcoming semester. During the session, we will cover information on what OPT is, and the application process including eligibility rules, timeline and required documents for submission.
